It works very well with my mini wood lathe. I've made a bunch of Koa Wood pens using the equipment. For the money, it was well worth it.

Given it's the 1st one I used, I bought it to use with my Jet Mid lathe to make the Rockler cigar kits, have not made any pens yet but I'm sure it would do the job.

I have used this so many times recently.This mandrel is my work horse. I made 25 pens in the past 3 days and have had no problems with the mandrel. I love it. No screw to fuss with and no adjustments depending on the blank size.It's a time saver and we'll with the money to own this.

I bought this instead of a mandrel saver as my old mandrel was getting worn out and I had just gotten a new lathe, so I was replacing equipment anyway. The product works smoothly and is easy to use. The piece for the tailstock works well. The only reason I don't give it five stars (and I'm being picky) is that the bushings seem really light and I have concerns as to how they'll hold up. I have my own anyway, so I'm not worried about it. Highly recommend.

Some mandrels rely on a compression nut to hold the pen blank in position. This tool allows you to use your tailstock quill to be used as the compression device. It is almost idiot proof, with a Morris Taper on both ends, you just put your drilled halves onto the mandrel, set the shims (included) and insert the tapers into your head tube and into the tailstock tube. Then adjust and tighten the tailstock into position. The tailstock is a live center, so you never have to worry about heating or split out.

This allows me to apply pressure from the tail stock directly on the wood blank instead of on the end of the mandrel which if appliec too heavily, will bend the mandrel. I have two lathes so this allows me to apply finish to 2 blanks on one mandrel at the same time while turning on another lathe. Well made.

I am new to pen turning and was unsure about what to get. This mandrel seems to work well, it seems strong and well built and then fact it comes with the mandrel saver is great. I was able to start turning pens for the first time like someone who knew what they were doing and I got great results.For turning 7mm slimline pens, I do not know why I would by anything else.Every one in the family is getting a pen for Christmas.
