i was a little worried when i bought this for my grizzly 9x49 manual mill as the manual states to not use a shell mill larger than 3 inches, but this 6 inch shell mill is perfectly balanced im getting super clean finishes i tried a 4140 plate (mcmastercarr said it was HRC40 ) surface pass at 0.050 depth of cut at about 12 inches per minute and its a mirror finish and i did a 6x2 inch plate of ar500 steel (hrc60) at 0.010 depth and its also a mirror finish i used arktech inserts and mist coolant

I was going to buy a fly cutter and an indexable insert lathe tool. For the price this will do fine with options for other milling in my 6061 cnc/manual milling shop. As a 42+ year retired former machinist, instructor, QA inspector, supervisor, manufacturing engineer and project manager, I would give this a 2 star review for daily precision use. If you love burrs then this is right up your alley (5 stars if you like burrs). It came with free hospital burrs on nearly every edge including the insert pockets. Straight from the machine to packaging with no deburring or QA interference. The insert holding screws are very loose but work. The key slot is nicely burred. It looks like they ran a deburr tool on the machines that raised more burrs than they removed. I spent 30 minutes with a mouse sander, jeweler files and emery cloth to get it functional. I would not bother indicating all 4 inserts. I would bet up to 0.005" tip variation based on previous use of Chinese indexable tools. The core holes drilled for the m2.5 or m3 insert screws are burred where they exit the body. The bore to R8 holder fit is acceptable. There is 0.040" clearance on the key fits which I prefer to be tighter. I bought this to fly cut 2.25" wide aluminum, with only 1 insert, so I give this 5 starts for fly cutting. At some point I will check the insert runout and use it for other milling. My advice is, if you buy one, remove the screws and toss it in a tumbler for a while before handling it. My tumbler is full of fine stones so I had to handwork the hard burrs.

I have used this for aluminum and mild steel and the finish was very good. Plus the R8 shank allows me to use other styles or sizes as well

I'm cutting up some forklift steel as it's the only big stuff that I've got lying around. I think it's like a 4160 steel and it's pretty tough stuff. I've been running it with the black and gold inserts alternating and the finish comes out pretty nice.

Bought this some time back for an upcoming project and when I needed to use it the arbor locked up on my draw bar almost a 1/4" before the taper seated. Other than the arbor the head is well made and I am sourcing an arbor locally.
