I've tried and tried, but I can't make this work. I'll admit upfront that it could be operator error, but I have tested this with multiple light sources and followed every suggestion I can find online, since there are no real instructions. All I can see is a fuzzy prism without the chart. I've tested it on known gems, and it looks like it might be reading okay, if it would only focus. Also, I can see the chart sometimes, but not with the prism. Maybe a professional gemologist could figure out how to make it work...or maybe this one is defective. I don't know, but I think there's a reason this is such a bargain.

Somewhat difficult to use and instructions are sketchy. Still, at this price point it's hard to beat.

Considering the cost and some of the recent 2020 & 2021 reviews, I’d thought this might be a gamble. And I lost. The internal components in the scope I received aren’t satisfactory for their intended use.+ Arrived well packaged, looks very sleek and heavy duty.- Focusing adjustments are unable to compensate for the interference from the scuffed lenses and the chipped internal prism. The chipped prism is visible through the lens. It isn’t reparable, and would have to be replaced. The scuffed lenses would require disassembly and polishing or replacement (the most prominent scuff is on the objective’s interior). - Observable spectrum is blurry under all focusing adjustments/conditions with this scope.- The entirety of the spectrum has a sigmoidal bend directly through the center. Could be due to the ridges in the adjustable slit and/or an unpolished side of one of the internal prisms.Overall - a $$pendy and disappointing purchase. Not recommended.I’m going to aim much lower in both price and expectations and will try out one of the $7.99 Eisco spectrometers.

I included a picture so you can see the size of the instrument compared to my hand. It corresponds to the middle spectrascope shown in Liddicoats Gem Book. The instrument is hefty, sturdy and well made. It is made in India and comes in a padded wooden box. They ship DHL with a signature required. Well packaged and safely shipped.

Slit is pretty bad. Looks old stock and needed to be cleaned out. The adjustable slit is rubbish. I will be trying to put my own slit on. I mostly got this because it was the style that Dr Raman carried around.

Very well-made. Precision instrument. It also gives me great satisfaction to know this is the same type of spectrometer that CV Raman carried around in his pocket on his days off.

It's a good scope, but I wish it had included better instructions regarding use. The single page had no information on suitable light sources, how to properly line up a gemstone to be scoped, or troubleshooting tips. As an amateur in properly using spectroscopes, I had to go to completely unrelated sources to find the minimum basics for using this item.

I decided to play with this DVS after reading some literature on the original Direct Vision Spectroscopes by Hoffman and Jansen. While these kind of spectroscopes typically get used in the Gems & Jewelry industry, I just wanted to use it for the fun of it. I wish the Alignment of the scale had been a little better. It can be adjusted with the provided screws; but came in misaligned when shipped. That's just a minor lament. As a college kid, after being used to the Table Spectrometer, it felt good to see the miniaturized spectroscope being manufactured in India. I disassembled it to see the 5-prism assembly as well. I'm not sure these days if the ground glass and flint glass prisms are separated by Canada Balsam or some other epoxy; but this gadget can surely be calibrated and is a joy to play with, if only to validate the wavelengths from known crystals in the visible spectrum. As some other reviewer mentioned, a more detailed manual accompanying this spectroscope would've been nice-to-have.

A wonderful tool for gem testing laboratory. I bought it. It's the best deal because buying a direct vision spectroscope is very expensive.. gemologists have external light source...so this can be used instead of diffraction spectroscope. Very beautiful bands are visible. Honestly I could hardly see through diffraction grating spectroscope.

Hazy spectrum. I do not think the spectrum is upto the mark.
