I read many comparable product reviews. This one was less expensive than the name brands and had higher reviews, making this one an easy choice. In addition, one outstanding thing is that this is the only one I could find that allows for replacing the battery pack. What a concept right? Many of the more expensive ones simply do not allow for battery replacement, which to me is unacceptable. Radio seems to receive clear signals and holds a charge well, although we have not been out on the water since Christmas and winter so am testing it one way. Have not had a chance to test range with another vessel, but reviewers state it transmits strong for hours. One thing I would add is there should be a 12Volt charged made available, or as part of a package purchase so that I can charge on board the boat and not have to carry home to charge. At this point I am happy with this product and will change/update this review if I find issues with the unit. Happy boater with new handheld VHF.

Can't beat the value here, and this radio works great, I did a radio check on channel 16 from my house, about 20 miles from the closest body of water that VHF would be utilized, and got a loud and clear

This is my first handheld radio purchase in over 20 years, so I was impressed with how far industry features and technology have come in general and specifically how capable this little radio was for the price. Full disclosure - I have not had a chance to test it for any real length of time or out on the water. I also chose not to give it a dunk to test its waterproof claim or the "float and flash" alarm, otherwise the radio with all its features, functions as advertised. One note concerning battery life: if you want to use the scan function, turn off the backlight as it otherwise stays on in scan mode. The included user's manual is a bit of an eye test, so I encourage downloading the e-version from the Retevis website. The manual could do a more thorough job of explaining the purpose of some of the features and subsequently I did have a couple of questions concerning squelch settings and the monitor key. What I found most impressive was the Retevis customer support! They responded in less than an hour to both my initial question and to a follow-up on the monitor function. The squelch issue was my bad as I kept expecting to get static / noise at a setting of 2 or 3 like my other radios but found with this one I had to turn it off (setting of 0) to find noise so squelch in my case works best set at level1. The monitor function essentially provides a one button push to bypass squelch when receiving a very weak signal, push it again and you're back to your squelch setting.So far, I found the Retevis RM21 to be a feature packed handheld at a great price with excellent customer support.

I've had this radio for several months now. I work on a ship and use this 18 horus a day 7 days week. The battery has never dropped below 50% and it's been through a rough season so far yet has never malfunctioned. I like the features it offers and I can usually get out about 10 miles if I need to talk to another ship. Close range is perfect and I can hear my ship mates perfectly as we use the same radio. My only complaint is the volume knob is somewhat lose so it can be turned down just by grazing your arm alongside it and the fact that the radio doesn't come with a corded microphone but for $70 at the time I bought this, it's not a big deal. I can attest to it's weather seal keeping it water proof. I've had this thing soaked in water multiple times and it works just fine afterwards. Hopefully your experience is just as good as mine.

Shipping was fast and packaging was good. I bought two, one for back up. I did radio checks from 1-5-10-20 miles offshore. Never got an answer from 20 miles but was clear and loud at 17 miles. This was on High power setting. It was also easy to hear over the outboard engine sound. Battery life was good after a full charging upon receiving. Radio is shipped not charged. I’m blown away it floats if dropped in the water. If dropped in the dark the radio lights up to make finding it simple. It’s waterproof for sure. The charging stand is a plus. I would buy again.

Good quality, I was impressed with the distance, I was 10 miles out on lake Michigan when I tested this radio with no problems, I like the floating feature although I didn't test that part and hopefully will never have to.
