I haven't gotten the whole terrarium set up just yet, but so far, so good. I bought the 10 pound bag and it was perfect to make a roughly 1.5 inch base layer in my 40 gallon (36x18inch) terrarium. I did not wash the balls, because when I opened the bag it appeared to have nearly no dust. After adding it to my tank, there was still no dust. However, your results may vary.

You may want to grab more of this than you think you’ll need for a proper drainage layer! I ended up needing to add additional gravel in my 12x12x18 but otherwise this stuff works great. Make sure to rinse it first!

I greatly underestimated the amount of hydro balls I needed for a drainage layer. This was a good budget option. One bag (combined with the first bag of zoo med hydro balls) was enough for my 18x18x24 enclosure. They’re a bit bigger in size compared to the hydro balls, but I don’t mind the variety.

These products work great and are much cheaper than competitors. Will continue to use for my reptile builds.

the 4lb bag was just enough for my 18×18×24" enclosure
