Kinda hard to make a bad sander. Much harder to perfect it. Great job rigid.

Bought a trim router/sander bundle (special buy) as I needed the router. Already have two 1/4 sheet professional sanders, so I thought I would sell the new sander. Looking at price and reviews to get idea of how much to sell it for and discovered the clamp issue. Since the sander has the front clamp issue I wouldn't want to sell it to someone and they have a problem. Now I plan to keep it, and during use fold a strip of painters tape over the front edge of the paper to keep the grit from wearing the clip and to give a tighter grip. I would suspect adding a couple layers of masking tape or even duct tape to the sandpaper sheet front edge may even work on a worn out clamp.

Came a little dusty, but wiped off and looks new. Works perfect. No problems

Normally I rave about Ridgid products...I have a raft of them...Shaper, table saw, sawzall, drills, impact driver...you name it. But the placement of the switch is the worst EVER -look at the picture where it is. Every time I grab it, it shuts itself off. It is beyond aggravating, and unsafe when used at height on an extension ladder. It is a design flaw of the highest magnitude...as if the designer has never used an orbital sander. They get an F grade, and supersedes the lifetime guarantee. I have switched back to my DeWalt which is not as tall, lighter, and has the switch > center/front with a dust cover right where it should be. Whatever product you buy, make sure it has the switch in the right place.

The front clamp on this sander does not hold the sandpaper very well. I use a strip of old sandpaper tucked under the new piece to make the paper thicker. This seems to help keep the paper in the clamp.

The spring loaded front clamp is inadequate to hold fine grit sandpaper such as 400 grit and higher. At about 60 grit to 120 grit the clamp holds OK. With 220 grit paper, I can get it to hold by folding over the paper by about 1/8" and working the folded edge under the clamp. When the sander was new I could get 400 and higher grit to hold using the folded edge method. However, the front clamp seems to have gotten progressively weaker over the several months I have owned the sander. Now 400 and higher grit paper pops out immediately when power is applied, even with the front edge folded over. The back clamp uses a different design and holds well. For the coarser paper that the unit can hold, the machine works quite well and I am satisfied with the speed, quality of the sanded surface, effectiveness of the dust collector, handling of the sander, and convenience of the opposing "on" and "off" buttons.Definitely not recommended until the front clamp is fixed. There are two problems with the front clamp. First, there is a plastic surface sitting on the sand paper. Second, when the plastic wears down a bit, as it must with many paper changes, the clamp falls backward and lands against the housing. With the clamp mostly resting on the housing and putting only a little pressure on the sandpaper, the sandpaper (especially high grit paper) is prone to pop out. When the sandpaper pops out while the sander is running it puts that much more wear on the plastic clamp surface. It looks like the clamp will fail when the plastic wears down only about 0.015" or 0.020" Now that I understand the problem better, it is not surprising that the popout problem first appears on the thinner, higher grit paper.I have changed the paper a few hundred times, but I expected the sander to last a lot longer than that. Most of the other brands of sander use a metal wire clamp. All these designs are very similar.I made a trip to both HD and Lowes carrying my own 1/4 sheet of 600 grit paper. I tested my 1/4 sheet on all the sanders I could at both stores. All the brands with metal wire clamps held the 600 grit paper well, and looked like they would give a very long life. These brands with metal wire clamps included DeWalt, Mikita, Ryobi, Black & Decker, and Porter Cable.Only this Rigid sander and, I think, the Bosch sander have a plastic surface pressing on the sand paper aa part of their clamp design. Unfortunately I could not test the Bosch. In any case, I am now considering only sanders with metal wire clamps.

I've owned this for years and never yet had an issue with the sandpaper coming loose from the front holder. I do agree that it's not the greatest design (the front spring loaded clamp pushes your paper out when you close it, the opposite of what you want). I have used this on and off, maybe not as much as the other reviewers here, but I've never had any issues with the sandpaper coming free during use. Maybe I'm lucky and got a good one.

Although Ridgid claim the sander can use non-adhesive and adhesive paper, only adhesive paper works. The clamping mechanism is not sufficient enough to hold non-adhesive paper to the unit, so it comes off immediately.Unless your intent is to use a sander on rare occasions for very small jobs, you will save money in the long run by purchasing a better designed sander which might cost 2x the price. Adhesive paper is very expensive.
