Hooks aren't the best option but will work. Rope and foam blocks work great!

The foam blocks do the job the hold the canoe off the roof. They didn't cause any scratches. As long as the roof surface is clean before. They are a dense foam and hold their shape well enough. They soft enough to give alittle when you tighten down your canoe. The pre-cut slots fit perfectly around the canoe hand rail.I did not use the included rope and strap. I used other ratchet straps. The canoe rode well on my trip and I had no issues.

Worked great to transport a newly purchased 70 lb pirouge from Louisiana to Georgia. Getting the front and rear tie-downs anchored took a bit, but once anchored properly, the boat didn't move. The center strap had to be twisted on both sides between the boat and car frame to prevent resonance-induced noise, but that was expected.

Just what we needed to carry our 14.5' canoe on our Toyota Highlander. Very sturdy setup. Could drive across the country with this!

This kit has everything needed to secure a canoe to a car, and it does a great job. My only issue is with the straps for securing the front and rear of the boat. Like most straps, the ones provided consist of 2 pieces: one with a hook on one end and a clamping mechanism on the other end, and one with a hook on one end and a free end. The free end of the latter segment goes into the clamp of the other segment, and you can adjust the total effective length. My problem is that the hook-clamp segment is too long. I only needed a short length of strap to fasten the front of my boat to attachment points under the hood of my car. Because the hook-clamp segment length was too long, I couldn't shorten the total length enough to tighten the strap. Luckily I had some other right-sized straps on hand, otherwise I would have had to get creative. Many vehicles have attachment points that are far enough away from the front of the canoe that the aforementioned issue will not be a problem. Just be aware that there is a minimum strap length that can be achieved. (I didn't measure it, but I think it's about 6 feet.)

Took a canoe on top of my Wrangler from Maine to Jersey, few small trips since then and still works.

Unless your boat/canoe is awfully light, this device can be a pain to use. Once the boat is on the roof with the foam blocks in place & the straps tightened, it provides a very stable & secure mount. The supplied center strap was too short & I was forced to improvise, using a similar, longer strap that I already had.

We bought the canoe kit to work with our existing luggage rack on our Jeep Laredo but the foam blocks were not tall enough to work. We kept the kit though as the tie downs are of good quality, figuring we could use the foam blocks another time on a car with no racks. I would recommend measuring the blocks against what you have before relying on the name "Universal".
