This RME ADI-2 FS arrived today. I am building a home studio and plan to utilize this as the primary D/A to my monitors (speakers) and as a 2-channel A/D converter to a RME 9652 soundcard. I'll finish a better review once the studio is built but I wanted to give some first impressions on the D/A of this device as a former professional musician and audio engineer.I haven't been in a studio setting for a little over a decade, but my ears still work and I understand a large part of the science. My home office PC is connected to a Cambridge Audio DacMagic Plus which feeds 2 Yamaha HS80M Monitors and a Yamaha HS10W subwoofer. In my review of the DacMagic Plus I mentioned hearing details in my music collection that I had not heard in an older m-Audio device I had used for years - there was and remains a definite improvement. Going from a $150 device to a $500 device (at the time, they're ~$350 new in late 2020) was well worth it. The RME ADI-2 FS is roughly double the price. So what do you get for that?As far as audio from my PC, I prefer the RME. A newer, more modern signal flow and converters better utilize the potential my speakers have. Would my wife notice? Probably not. We're into the margins here. 2% better? 5%? 10%? Sure. I'm in the 2%-5% range. Split hairs if you want. I'd rather get to work and will keep the aging-but-still-awesome older device in my office and will enjoy it for many more years. The RME's D/A sounds great. It's "pro."I expect the RME to perform quite well as a 2-channel D/A feeding my monitors, as well as serving duty as a A/D for mic pres, DI's, and any sort of funky situations that call for it. Learning the interface and buttons took about an hour of fiddling and reading the manual, which should be read. Also, not in the manual: the power plug is a locking mechanism, so you need to plug it into the back of the ADI at the correct angle and twist it to secure it in place. At first I thought it was a defective plug as it only powered on if I applied downward pressure, until I took a closer look and saw the indents. The headphone amp is LOUD. With some of the songs in my collection, 3 o'clock has my Oppo PM-3 driver moving more than they should. This will be great for recording when there is a large guitar/bass amp in the room, or a drum set. I do wish there was a way to bypass the XLR outs when headphones are plugged in. That's one of my favorite features of the device I mentioned previously - headphones go in, headphone volume resets to last setting, and when I unplug the headphones my speakers are set at the level they were before I plugged in the headphones. If this is possible with the RME, someone please let me know as I couldn't find it in the manual.Setting the clock is easy, and a double check with the manual will explain things clearly. The DS (Dual Speed) and QS (Quad Speed) modes are there so we are able to utilize all features up to 192khz without sacrificing inputs or outputs like we used to.The metering with digital sources on the input tends to show a OVR (red lights) a little early. I like this and will use it as a visual cue to back off while mixing, so whoever masters my work will have some headroom to work with.So far, so good. I'm a proud owner even though I've only tested it as a D/A for about 8 hours. I'll update this in the coming months as I get to use the other half of it's capabilities. 4.5 out of 5 (headphone bypass would be nice, word clock coaxial connections would be nice [still researching, please advise if unnecessary].
