Product Description

The VR2 is your new "secret weapon" active ribbon mic, providing all the midrange magic of a traditional ribbon without sacrificing the edge of your high frequencies.

The VR2 active ribbon microphone from sE marks a new era for ribbon mic technology, achieving full-range frequency response using a clever mechanical device designed by Siwei Zou, the company CEO, a custom transformer and active circuitry, and a hand-tensioned ribbon constructed by our highly specialized technicians in sE's capsule room. The result is a superbly detailed, open and natural recording of acoustic instruments, vocals and guitar cabs. The VR2's ability to perform - coupled with its unique look - has already made it a secret weapon for top musicians and engineers worldwide.

VR2 on drum overheads

"I love the added air at the top end; they deliver more high-end than traditional ribbons. Drums have become very open and natural, and cymbals no longer hurt."

- Ryan Pickett, FOH Engineer (My Morning Jacket, Ray LaMontagne)

CUSTOM RIBBON & ACTIVE CIRCUITRY FOR EXTENDED FREQUENCY RESPONSE

Unlike traditional ribbons, which can sometimes sound very dull in the high frequencies, the VR2's clever mechanical design helps the mic achieve an extended frequency response that preserves the bite and edge of your guitar cabs or cymbals, while still smoothing out any harshness. And the transformers and active circuitry provide enough gain for any source you need to mic.

VR2 mic in shock mount

VERSATILE CUSTOM SHOCK MOUNT

The VR2's custom-built shock mount allows not only for isolation from mechanical vibration, but also for versatile, flexible mic placement. The lower portion of the mount can be centered inside the mount for extra protection, or flip to outside the mount so the VR2 can reach underneath a snare or be pressed flat against a speaker grille cloth.

VR2 in wooden box

WOODEN CASE AND ACCESSORIES

Each VR2 comes complete inside a wooden presentation box, and includes a mic clip, mic stand thread adapter, and custom shock mount.

Why a handcrafted ribbon?

VR1 ribbon element being handcrafted in the sE factory

...because they sound better that way.

As with all of sE's ribbons and true condensers, the VR2’s ribbon element is handcrafted and hand-tuned by skilled technicians in our own factory. This is almost unheard-of for affordable microphones, and is a great point of pride for sE.

I am employing this mic as a stage mic (V2 with phantom power) for various wind instruments and hand percussion. It seems so far that it's broad polar pattern, and relatively open directional design make it easier to play into than a classic vocal mic. It still seems to give a better result when instruments are played closely into it, but I have also tried it as a drum overhead for cymbals and toms, and felt that it worked.

This is my favorite mic. I like it even more than the Royer R10
