I have been using sickles for over 50+ years and although the shape was slightly more closed than I’m used to and the blade heavier than others I have used, it cut very well without having to hone or even sharpen it with the stone. Can’t explain the poor reviews, maybe there were a lot of unfinished blades or maybe a lot of users who don’t know how to use a sickle (grass hook) and sharpening stone!

bought seymore sickle from amazon in the past; this was not the same. very poor quality; edges were not ground straight; handle was cheap; overall not a workable tool

My son bought me this as a gift. I like to garden so it was appropriate. It works well, but I think I will sharpen it and attach it to a longer handle so I can swing a little harder. Did 't cut that well out of the box.

First off the grind on the blade ran off the rails. The top was ok but the bevel they tried to put on the back ran off and away from the edge. Almost like someone fell asleep at the grinder or was in such a hurry they didn't watch what they were doing. Second thing is the handle parallel with the blade. So you'll need to be sitting on the ground to use it. The blade is good and hard steel though. It does not want to bend, you're not going to be able to bend it without annealing it first. Even with some force it sprang back. So on that regard I think the blade is good quality. I did get an "ok" edge on it with a file and a stone. However there isn't much depth to the blade, a few passes on the grinder and you'd have nothing left to sharpen. This one is hand sharpen only. Handle is nothing special, it's not bad, it's just there.Let's talk about the shape of the "hook", it's not quite right. Seems like it works more on a sideways motion then a "left and back" motion. So you're going to have to work a little harder. I like my flea market sickle, the blade has a curve that makes a nice slicing motion when you swing it. This doesn't have that shape. It just makes me think of ice cream, it looks like the same carton but it's ever so much smaller. You wouldn't notice the difference until you held it up next to the old one.

Quality of the steel is rather low. No matter how it's sharpened when you grab a clump of grass and pull this through it works with force. I have the feeling a sharp stick would work too. What it is good for and one of the reasons I got it, is to reach into difficult areas under thorny rosa rugosa ... it is an excellent tool for that.

Nicely made. Must practice sharpening and cutting.

My husband and I use this scythe all the time to control tall weeds. This tool is becoming really hard to find at local hardware stores; I don't know why, it is so handy.

I ordered this to replace a lost working English hand cycle. Thinking good Austrian steel, when it arrived, I was disappointed. It is basically a toy. It is too lightweight to function as a working cycle. It is made ok, but do not figure on cutting a lot of grass or weeds. Will make a good wall decoration!
