Side Tracks for Window Shades: The Solution to Light Leaks That Keep You Up at Night

Hi! My name is Robert, aka Bob The Blind Guy, a window treatment installer for the last 30 years. As an installer, I get immediate feedback. Most are very happy and love their new look. But some are disappointed. One area that stands out the most is blackout shades that are supposed to block out the light. The problem is the shade material does a great job at stopping light, but there is always light that seeps in along the edges. Many thought that the shade was supposed to block all light and are upset when they learn the truth. I felt bad for the customers since I think they were a little misled. I always thought about developing a product to solve this and finally with the help of my wife Jan and after hearing enough complaints, I did. And that’s how Sleepy Time Tracks was born. It’s been six years now that they’ve been on the market. We get great feedback from our customers and they are very thankful that someone finally did something about this.

This was the perfect answer to the gap in my blinds! I wanted pitch black in my room and was able to get it with these. They are super easy to install and the quality has been great. I was able to easily cut them with my kitchen scissors and they stuck to the wall with no problem.

Absolute game changer. Working night shift means needing good blackout during the daytime, that annoying strip of light to the side of the roller shades always bothered me. After installing these the room is completely dark. It’s sleek enough and doesn’t take away from the room decor. Easy to install, just peel and stick. It can be trimmed to fit the length of your window but since the material is thick it’s a bit difficult to cut. Don’t expect to use a kitchen scissors, I ended up using a utility knife and even then it was a task but I guess if it were thinner then it would be too flimsy

This is a premium-priced product. Given that, I'm a bit disappointed that the adhesive did not stick to the walls. Initially, this darkened the room very well. You can see now that the edges left and right have small gaps that let in what actually is a significant amount of light. With the two-piece kit, I was able to block out light on the top and bottom as well. Unfortunately oh, it still lets in a noticeable amount of light on the sides... But better than it used to be. Perhaps customer service will reach out to me with a resolution / solution; otherwise, I may have to resort to glue or screws.

We purchased this in 2022 in a dazed state of new parenthood. It worked really well to close out the remaining light and helped our toddler sleep. Two years on, I was nervous about removing it before we check out of our rental apartment. I dug out my order and emailed Sleepy Time Tracks: they were very responsive and reassuring, so I went ahead and peeled it away.Pleased to report it came off easily and cleanly in one piece, with only a slight discoloration of the paint (which I haven't even tried to remove as our landlord is painting anyway). No residue or foam left. And this wasn't new paint either, but probably a decade old (typical white gloss paint of a window fitting). I'm impressed!

GREATLY reduces light leaks around the edges of blackout shades. Let there be darkness! One star taken off for value for money. Seems a bit pricey for the materials involved, but otherwise, five stars. Also, not trivial to fit around the blind brackets, and requires modification (i.e. cutting up) for satisfactory results - but that's not the fault of this product. Ideally, you'd leave a SLIGHT (1/8") gap on both sides of your made-to-measure blackout shades when installing to allow room for these to go in with less fuss, but if we're talking "ideally," ideally the shade companies would license these and sell them to you as an option up front.

These strips are amazing. We had big gaps on the sides of our blinds ever since we had them installed. We bought a set of these and they are simply the best. We loved the first set so much we ordered two more! The trickiest part of installing is making sure you get it right the first time cuz there is no going back. They STICK!!! Love em!

I have two large top down bottom up black out shades in the bedroom, and for the most part, keeps the room pretty dark. About 10-15% light leaking from the sides… these are super easy to cut to desired length and simply stick the adhesive side to the edge of the wall, and now these’s maybe a 3-5% light leak. Overall, these definitely helps to block out more lights. Good buy. Also, I did paint the white to an egg shell color to match the walls and these toleranced the paint just fine.

I have suffered for years between the months of April to September when the sun is up before me trying to make a sleeping mask do the trick but of course it always slipped off. I face the east and sleep literally 3 feet from the window. For years, I just suffered. Then last summer I actually went to the big box stores looking in different aisles like trim work, flooring and paint/wallpaper departments for L-shaped trim or something could could block out the light with no luck. Then I found these on-line!I messaged the seller as I too have painted window frames (very old wood), and knowing what I know, I thought instead of taping on, I'd pre-drill holes into the plastic and window frame then screw down. And it worked great! I've attached pictures to show you with the lights on in the house and the lights off (both during the day). The warmer image is the lights on. I wanted the flexibility to remove the strips to clean my window, Otherwise I would have just stuck them down with the tape. I saw a few reviews that mentioned it removed the paint from their window frame, but honestly, wouldn't any adhesive? That's just the way sticky tape and paint goes, especially with an area exposed to heat, cold and moisture. Don't fault the product for that. I'm sure the adhesive would have been great or the option with the magnets too (which would have also pulled the sides in much tighter to the frame to super black out) but I was willing to take my chances with my adaptation.I also trimmed the upper corners with a pair of durable scissors to fit around the top rail and block the light out up there as well. Please keep in mind this material can fracture if you take it upon yourself to cut in a manner like this, which I was prepared for. Again, don't fault the product. There were no issues cutting the length down.Sorry, I should have take a before picture but I was excited to get them up right away. I had about 3/8"-1/2" of light coming in on each side. But you can see by the light at the top and bottom how bright just a sliver of light can be.These things rock! Wooohooo!

I have two complaints. First, I wish they (or the foam tape) was thinner, installing them required me to remove the end caps from the bottom bar, and even then the fabric only has like half a millimeter of clearance on either side, and only then after a lot of tweaking. Be warned that they may not fit in your window if your blinds were professionally measured/installed (and thus have narrow gaps).Second, I wish the part that adhered to the window frame was wider. Honeycomb shades are not a uniform thickness when they're down, and due to that and slightly out-of-square window frames, there's maybe a quarter or half inch of the white window frame visible for some parts of the blinds, letting light through. I've added some black gaffers tape to try to extend the black area on the window frame, but it's not as thick, so it's not ideal. If the light blocking strips were like half an inch wider, they'd block a lot more light for me.
