The steel thread cutting screw has a zinc plating, a Type F point style, and a serrated hex washer head with a slotted drive. The type F point is suitable for heavy gauge sheet metal, aluminum, cast iron, brass, and plastic. The screw has machine screw threads that taper down to a blunt point with multiple cutting edges and chip cavities. Steel is often used in applications where strength is the primary consideration. The zinc plating offers corrosion resistance and has a reflective appearance. The hex washer head has six flat sides that a wrench can grip to turn from the side, enabling use when there is no space above the head for a screwdriver. The serrated flange acts like a washer to increase the fastener's bearing surface and distribute the clamping force over a larger area, providing a grip that resists loosening. The slotted drive has a linear slot for use with a flat-blade driver.

Thread cutting and thread rolling screws, two types of self-tapping screws, are threaded fasteners that create a mating thread in the wall of a hole. The two screws differ from each other in the way that they create the threads. Thread cutting screws cut the wall of the hole to create the thread, creating material chips that need to be cleared away from the hole to prevent clogging. Thread rolling screws, also called thread forming screws, do not remove material but instead press against the wall of the hole to displace the material and form the threads.

My John Deere tractor, almost 30 years old now, suddenly started to slow and got very loud. I babied it into the garage and found the engine was just sitting on the deck with one mounting bolt holding it down. I bought all new bolts, only to find all of the holes stripped out, including the one that still had a bolt in it. I thought about pulling the engine, drilling and tapping the case but balanced the work against the age of the mower. I bought these self-tappers after doing a little size research. They did insert, they did turn in with some cutting oil on the threads, and tightened up nicely. After about six uses (I have almost two acres to mow) they are all tight. I probably should have used Locktite but didn't. However none of them show any signs of loosening and I will check them a couple of times through the year. I also pulled the muffler (pulled apart from the engine flopping around) and did a little tig welding on it. It also works well, but my welding skills and the age of the muffler (and the vibrations incurred) probably mean it will be the first to fail from my little John Deere repair. The worst part is, the mower works perfectly and has for 30 years. I just couldn't see a $3500 replacement if I could repair it.

Used these working on a Jeep to pull and hold together 3/16" steel frame stiffeners. They did the job perfectly.

Worked perfectly for a stripped out bracket. Now it's nice and tight

I needed one of these to attach a heavy gauge ground cable to a truck frame. It did indeed cut its own threads and has remained tight.

Good quality, good performance.I used several of these and they worked well.I drilled a pilot hole and the bolts cut the threads using electric impact wrench.
