I keep this folded and in its bag in the back of my offroad vehicle. It’s small and sturdy and unlike someone else mentioned I have had no problem with it locking together: just turn the locking ring till tight and it stays assembled. I have used it for duties around camp and have used it just one time in an emergency situation. Stuck in a snow drift and with the truck chassis stuck on solid ice 7000ft up a mountain pass myself and buddies used this and traction boards to dig out. Including using the edge to hack at solid ice. 3 hours in severe weather and we got free. I really would recommend it. I would not suggest you would want to be digging big holes or moving a lot of soil etc with this - it’s short and you’d have to bend down a lot, but for emergency use to keep in the back of the truck for the one time you need it, it will work. For me it paid for itself in one use in bad weather.

the shovel comes with its own carrying case, very sturdy and folds up very small, I bought this for the lightweight small size to put in my 4x4 pickup so if I get stuck I have a shovel in the truck so I can dig it out. don't get stranded without the right tools, this is a really good value for the money.

The Smittybilt 2728 R.U.T. shovel arrived quickly and safely. Though I have yet to really field test it, a little playing around proved it to be easy to unpack & extend, strong and sturdy. It comes in a small black pouch that is good enough for what it is. Keep in mind that when the shovel is fully extended it's still rather short. This is a "recovery utility tool" meant to take up as little space as possible while still being useful, so it's short enough you probably aren't going to get a whole lot of leverage or dig a quick crater.

I go off roading in my Jepp JK a lot. Nice to have something so compact and easy to extend and use. You never know when you will need it. Light and comes with a case.

This is a nice shovel to have when your on the trails, it folds up super compact and slids into its case, I have this shovel, a 20ft recovery strap, 3 D-rings and 2 tie down straps all in a ammo can that I toss in my truck before I head out, Ive used it to dig my tires out a few times and it has worked well and the lock doesnt loosen up at all, I have ordered a few of these for family and friends and they all the shovel.

I've gone through many travel shovels. Most failing around the washer that secures the blade. This Smittybilt shovel has no such washer and a much more awesome design, in my opinion of course. Smittybilt for the win!

I haven't used it yet so I cant comment on how sturdy or functional it is. However I do wish the serrated edge on the shovel was actually serrated and sharp. The edge on this shovel is more of a cringle smooth edge, almost cosmetic.

For the price and the peace of mind of having this tool in the trunck it's worth it! Looks sturdy. It's one of those things that you hope you never have to use them, but will be glad you have them handy when you're stuck in sand or snow. I tried on sand, it works great. Would recommend.
