Stainless steel round bars come in a variety of sizes, alloys, and finishes. These particular rods are the "precision ground" variety, which is not stated anywhere in the product description. This type of surface finish is extremely precise and round with a very nice appearance. The size in the description is a bit confusing since it says 8mm, 0.315", and 5/16 inch. 8mm is very close to 0.315" (0.31496") but 5/16 is only 0.3125". I put a micrometer on several of these rods at different places, and they are remarkably consistent in their measurements. Everywhere I measured was exactly 0.3147", which is about 7.993mm. This is a much tighter tolerance than I would expect from run-of-the-mill stainless round bars. The description says these can be used for milling cutters, knives, bearings, etc.. This is actually not true, since each of those items would require a type of hardening steel which this is definitely not. 304 stainless is reasonably hard, but nowhere near hard enough to be used for a milling cutter or bearing. It is great for random projects where you need a strong material that's not going to rust. It would work great for dowel pins or shafts where a precision O.D. is required. My 6 pieces of steel came well packaged and looks fantastic. Definitely a better finish and tolerance than I was expecting. Overall a great product, just be aware of what 304 stainless is actually used for and you'll be happy.
