The radio was just the right size. It fit on the console just right. I bought the flush mounting kit and the cover as well. It looks great. I connected the radio to my Garmin nav display using the NMA2000 connector. I had to buy an additional T and cable to add to the connection. My Garmin is connected to my Yamaha 200hp engine and the radio. It works flawlessly. I bought also a 48” antenna to expand the signal. I requested MMSI number through BoatUS. It’s free for members. I have not tried the range but the weather stations work very well and channel 16 picked up constant chatter throughout the inter coastal waterways.

This Standard Horizon model 1850 is said to be a great radio, and it probably is, but I thought it was the model that has gps included but it doesn’t so I returned it for the Standard Horizon GX1800gb that DOES have the gps included. I left off a star because I haven’t used this model but left 4 stars because my son loves the 1800, and if you don’t need gps included I believe it’s probably still a great radio.

I upgraded and replaced my old Cobra VHF with the Standard Horizon GX1850. The unit was simple to install and activate the MMSI through BoatUS (Free). Upon turning it on the units internal GPS does not find any satellites, after 10 minutes you can bypass when it starts to beep. The unit is in the box above the center console with a soft-top T -top. The Cobra had no issue obtaining a signal on the internal GPS (no external GPS) Unfortunately I have not had a chance to run the NMEA2000 cable to it from my Garmin, being it will be a nightmare to fish it through the tubing. I even placed my handheld Garmin in the box and turned it on which had no issues locking onto a signal. A little disappointed with the internal GPS of the VHF Unit. If you are going to relay on the internal GPS of this unit you might want to check aroundUPDATE: I called Tech Support whom informed me the GX1850 does not have an internal GPS and relays on external GPS Signal such as a GPS antenna or Chart Plotter via Nmea2000 or Nmea 0183

Very small and light package allows it to fit nearly anywhere. Installation instructions and operating instructions are fairly clear and good drawn diagrams help. User interface is considerably revised from previous GX2100 AIS series. The addition of an NMEA2000 interface for GPS and other data makes it ideal to simplify digital interfaces. It does include older NMEA0183 interface for GPS data so it is useful for replacing a radio in older installations as well. Instructions for choosing NMEA2000 or 0183 bus for GPS data is NOT clear and required some experimenting. Generally speaking you will need to know the model number names of your NMEA2000 bus that supplies GPS data and choose that item. Make no other changes!! Otherwise installation was fairly easy.
