I read so many good reviews I decided to get this VHF for my sailing catamaran. Since I already have an nmea 2000 chartplotter, I did not need an internal GPS in my radio and I also wanted a large format commercial grade radio. The price was right and the radio works great as advertised. But even better than that is the customer service/tech support. I gave the radio four stars only because the manual was not as complete as it could be in terms of connecting the VHF on an existing nmea 2000 backbone. However the tech support person guided me concisely and precisely to the solution after which I entered a note in my manual. About the only disadvantage of this model is that it can only be programmed one time with an mmsi number after which it needs to be sent back to the factory. Newer models can be reset remotely. This seems trivial but if you program in a BoatUs domestic mmsi and then want to go foreign you must get a new mmsi from the FCC. For an agency that precides over matters having to do with data and computers they have the most inept website and provide no mechanism to incorporate your existing mmsi into a shipstation license for foreign voyaging. This detail will not concern 99% of the people reading this review but it might help someone.

Best VHF radio I’ve ever owned. NMEA 2000 networking is awesome. With N2K, GPS position data from my Lowrance HDS feeds right into the VHF. The position data along with my MMSI number makes sending an emergency distress call a sure thing. It takes the “search†out of search and rescue.AIS data from other vessels received by the VHF appears right on the chart in the HDS. Other vessels appear as triangles on my charts. The mic has a speaker built in, making it easy to hear in a loud environment by holding it to your ear.Love it! My ICOM was a dud. Will never buy another ICOM.

Good radio but they forgot to make a cover for it. If it’s in the sun it’s probably going to burn out the led screen. Let’s hope someone in corporate can get the job done.

Hooked the radio up and it would not power up and kept blowing fuses. Hoping it was just something faulty in the internal components. Always had quality radios in the past from Standard Horizon.

Our old radio did not receive nesrly the number of transmissions that this one dors. We feel we are in better touch with other boaters.

This does not have a built in gps. You will need to buy standard horizon's scu-31 gps antenna and receiver (it's that specific. Or else risk wiring your own receiver/antenna that's probably not compatible because it's likely standard horizons system and there is no industry standard). Your other option for gps is nmea network input. I intend to use it with a chart plotter with gps and nmea 2000. That being said, in an emergency dsc is only useful with gps.... so it would've been nice to have a built in gps in case the chart plotter or nmea network fail. If you're like me and always want to be prepared for failure then you need the scu-31. Of course the radio could fail all together and you should have a backup, but you definitely want a system with less separation to failure. That being said, I have no doubt that the rest of the device is up to standards. It's nice to not need to purchase an additional AIS receiver system. The downside of having too many systems combined into one is that failure can mean having to replace everything at once. Unfortunately the scu-31 is likely only compatible with standard horizon devices... another downside.

Feature rich, easy to use and clear sounding. This is probably the best VHF radio made to date.
