STANLEY 57-554 ST HMMR 11.5LB SOFT
Amazon.com
The Stanley Compo-Cast Sledge Model Soft Face Hammer features a non-sparking soft striking face, as well as a urethane covering to reduce noise pollution while working. Easy to wield, yet heavy enough for effective results, its steel reinforced handle provides added strength and safety by resisting breaking on overstrike, while its dead-blow function uses a steel shot to eliminate bounce back. Its flat head area allows for convenient upright storage. The hammer is 36 inches long and weighs 11-1/2 pounds.

I only knock down a star because of price. At over $140.00 for a sledge hammer, it is high. Most sledge hammer cost between $30 and $60, but at almost triple that, it is still worth it. I already owned the next size down and needed something a little larger. It works great.

A great sledgehammer for specialty jobs. It is deadblow, which means it:1) does not bounce after you hit something. You may be surprised the first few times you use it, expecting the usual recoil. But this sledge transfers all the energy down to the thing you're bashing, and so there's no energy left to bounce back. Also, because none of the force is lost, this 11.5 pounder seems to me to work as hard as a 16 pounder.2) does not mark the thing you're hitting. Well, you have to really catch the edge to make a mark on wood. If the face of the sledge hits the target flat, then it does not leave a mark.Yes, expensive. But it seems unbreakable (I've used mine in a commercial log home building construction yard for 20+ years--so that's $7 per year, and going down every year).I am a log home builder, and I teach and write about log home construction ( and . I also make a few specialty tools, like my Chambers Scribers .I do not know of a substitute for this sledge -- nothing else is quite like it. And it is great tool.
