Typical very high quality that you always get from Starrett and outstanding accuracy. My only complaint is that it is fairly time consuming to use - you have to know what (small) range you'll be measuring in, add on an extension piece (for larger measurements), add on another extension piece (for some measurements), and add on an extra shim or two (for certain measurements). I just measured a bore that was a tiny bit over 4.250" and had to do ALL of the above. I don't think this has anything to do with a poor design - it's just the nature of how these gauges work. This also makes it pretty difficult to read the first few times, but I think it will be pretty simple after a little practice.Despite the comments above that sound negative, I'm still giving this 5 stars since it is a highly accurate and precision piece of equipment that does exactly what it's supposed to do.

High quality tool that does what it’s supposed to do. Easy to set up………if you have half a brain and any mechanical intellect.

You trust the Starrett name for quality, and of the inexpensive China-made dial bore gauges, this is one of the most accurate units I have used. I’m giving it a 3-Star review because the spring pressure on the anvil is so substantial that it will carve a DEEP groove right in your engine bearings. Even with the most careful, gentle touch, I completely trashed a $200 set of engine bearings with this gauge. Do NOT order this dial bore gauge for checking bearing clearances, but for measuring inside hard surface housings you would be hard-pressed to find a better dial bore gauge under $500.

Purchased this dial bore gauge to verify where I’m at with my worn out engine block. This one cost little more than the model I first looked but I chose this one because of better accuracy. This serves my needs.
