I decided to go with proximity sensors vs mechanical sensors due to dust that would eventually affect the mechanical sensors. You DO have to get creative for mounting but that's solved by a trip to the hardware store for some 1"x1" L brackets. The trigger point seems to be about 5mm away from steel and the sensors seem reliable/repeatable. Another recommendation for "hobby" level CnC machines.

using this with a Daytona Velona speedometer #86210 / #86209 and it works excellent as a speed pickup off rear wheel brake rotor bolts. highly recommend.
