About this item

  • Timing From Microseconds to Hours
  • Astable or Monostable Operation
  • Adjustable Duty Cycle
  • TTL-Compatible Output Can Sink or Source up to 200 mA

These devices are precision timing circuits capable of producing accurate time delays or oscillation. In the time-delay or monostable mode of operation, the timed interval is controlled by a single external resistor and capacitor network. In the astable mode of operation, the frequency and duty cycle can be controlled independently with two external resistors and a single external capacitor.
The threshold and trigger levels normally are two-thirds and one-third, respectively, of VCC. These levels can be altered by use of the control-voltage terminal. When the trigger input falls below the trigger level, the flip-flop is set, and the output goes high. If the trigger input is above the trigger level and the threshold input is above the threshold level, the flip-flop is reset and the output is low. The reset (RESET) input can override all other inputs and can be used to initiate a new timing cycle. When RESET goes low, the flip-flop is reset, and the output goes low. When the output is low, a low-impedance path is provided between discharge (DISCH) and ground.
The output circuit is capable of sinking or sourcing current up to 200 mA. Operation is specified for supplies of 5 V to 15 V. With a 5-V supply, output levels are compatible with TTL inputs.

My students and I use these 8 pin dual inline 555 timer integrated circuits to make low frequency clock pulses for my protoype electronics. These reliable ICs are through-the-hole devices which allow breadboarding them into my solderless breadboards - to be extremely easy. The devices work as specified, were well packaged and were reliable in my electronic designs. I received the order on time in good packaging. I will purchase more of these ICs in the future.

A little fella built in the 70s with a single flip flop and two comparators, and a few resistors. That’s what’s in here, and that’s what makes it so capable.Build a doodad with one of these. It makes it so your DC voltage can oscillate and progress through an active sequence of logic when you add in a few more parts that you can find.

They work as expected. My only problem with them is the feet are too wide for my breadboard. I have to bend them in slightly the 1st time I use one. They fit snugly.

Nothing to dislike! Extremely versatile. My most humorous use was a cricket sounder placed in our school office manager’s work chair, up in the bottom where the stand meets the seat. It beeped every 10 minutes all day Thursday and Friday. Susan, the manager disassembled her typewriter and pronounced the problem cured, and left for the school weekend retreat at Big Bear Lake. I, being me, got into the lady’s cabin and planted the cricket in one of the easy chairs. While we dropped in to say hello, it beeped and gals almost got a whiplash….looking toward the chair. We left for dinner, but, later that evening there was a cricket in our cabin! Go figure! Enjoy the many uses of the NE 555 NOTE; NOT 100% INTERCHANGEABLE WITH THE CMOS 555. MIKE

I don't know if this device is a true Texas Instrument device. It has a vague TI logo printed on it and googled the part number and got nothing. Have yet to use it in any of my projects.

Texas Instrument NE555P Singleby Texas instrumentsThe first one I soldered in was dead. The second one worked. I tested the rest by plugging them into an existing project with a socket and they seemed ok but when soldered in on my next project which used two 555s the first chip worked for a few cycles and then its internal discharge circuit shorted out. The second 555 in that project shorted internally and never worked at all.In contrast I desoldered two 30 year old (or older) Motorola 555s out of two other projects and soldered them into this new project and they work fine and these ICs have moved to and from multiple projects over the years.
