I really enjoyed this book. It's my second book I've read from this author and I look forward to reading another book from her. The story was great, strong characters, fast paced, a little spooky, lots of mystery with some great twists.

Since, her debut, The Chalk Man, C.J. became easily one of my top 10 writers these days. Her first two novels, do show a lot of King influences ( both in writing and plot), however with her third novel, she did find her own style. The Burning Girls ( her 4th), it actually could be my fav from her. It's definitely a very well writtem novel, the pages are turning themselves. The story is told so nice, there are no useless chapters, everything flows perfectly.Combing supernatural / horror with mystery, lots of funny dialogues and thoughts, twists after twists, the characters are so well developt and so different from one another ( you have bad teenagers, bullies, friendly and not so friendly grownups ),nothing can go wrong here.I have no idea , if the Burning Girls, are actually inspired from British legends or history ( i will look into that), but the plot is also very original.Told from the perspective of a female vicar in first person, with a teenage daughter, with a very misteryous past and a terryfing present the story will keep you going on and on.A plus also for mentioning some bands that i love ( Nine inch nails and INXS ), and also for Vampirina ( that made me laugh every time )Yes, so far, my fav book of 2021 and i will definitely meet with you again,CJ., next year as you said in the "thank you" lines.

This is my third CJ Tudor book and the second book where the plot relies heavily on the theme of child abuse and bullying. It's pretty disturbing stuff. The plot also involves crimes in multiple time periods: The 12th century burning of heretics, the disappearance of several people 30 years prior to the book's present date, and a suspicious suicide in present day. All of this information gets doled out through the eyes of the main character, a vicar filling in temporarily at a small country church, who has a past of her own that we become aware of later on. I guess all of the events tie out at the end of the book, but it made my head hurt to try to figure out the plausibility of how each murder and disappearance occurred and who was to blame. And all of this bad stuff was going on and nobody ever suspected anything. Sometimes I got the people who were murdered or disappeared mixed up (Merry and Joy, for example). Were they the ones from 30 years ago, or from the past few days? I also got confused about whether or not someone who was alive 30 years prior was still alive in present day and how old they were when an event happened as compared to today. A great number of murders get revealed at the end of the book, and it left me saying, "Wait, what?"

I was EXTREMELY hesitant to read this book but I really wanted to because the synopsis sounded intriguing. I was hesitant because the only book I have read from this author was The Chalk Man and that story was (in my opinion) just awful. This book redeemed the author in my eyes. There were so many plot twists in this story that were very surprising. The Burning Girls kept me twisted up in suspense and mystery from beginning to end. It was delicious and I enjoyed it very much. Bravo!

Reverend Jack Brooks has been relocated to Chapel Croft in a small remote village on the English countryside. The previous vicar position suddenly opened and Reverend Brooks' name was recommended. Life in the small village is a hard adjustment for Jack and daughter Flo.The town is surrounded by a dark history that slowly begins to eek it's way into Jack's life. As secrets are uncovered and lies revealed Reverend Brooks' realizes evil comes in many forms ... ones not easily seen..I really liked The Chalk Man so I couldn't wait to read this one and I ended up enjoying it more. The mysteries uncovered, even through to the last chapter, were interesting and enjoyable. The twists and turns definitely kept my attention and made this a fun one. It's a quick read and definitely brings the chills and spooky factor. Great for those Spooktober lists.

This book is so clever in the sense that when you follow the storyline you try to solve who did what but in the end you find everything fall into place and it was all intentional. At the best ,i can see the atmosphere is set in a small town called Chapel Croft which is haunted by its burning past where maytrs sacrificed themselves by burning due to ethical reasons ,500 years ago Present day we follow this priest and her daughter settling here ,but soon gets involved in the past as the burning girls(2 young martyrs),beheaded ,slashed and burned keeps appearing to the daughter.Give it a read.Perfect for spooky small town vibes but most importantly what caught my attention was the mother -daughter dynamics ,which was phenomenal according to me.Present

My expectations were high after reading The Chalk Man, which I loved. But unfortunately, this was a whole other reading experience. The main issue I had was that the premise is very much the same as another book I've just read, The House of Dust by Noah Broyles: a family of two gets to move into a vacated old house at the outskirts of a remote village, where the locals are a bit crazy and are reveling into centuries old folklore and beliefs. Sounds pretty similar, right? But that's were the comparison ends because Noah Broyles manages to create a ghoulish atmosphere full of dark and twisted characters using really beautiful prose, and The Burning Girls falls rather flat in comparison.I can honestly say that when I was reading The House of Dust, I sometimes felt a bit scared to go to sleep at night. As with the Burning Girls, I was more reminded of the Vicar of Dibley - having Dawn French even pictured as the main protagonist. Just saying ... Now is it a bad book? No, but it is just ok. It won't deter me to read anything else from the author because an author who can come up with The Chalk Man can definitely do much better. On to the next one !
