About this item

  • First, save yourself a ton of time and use the Deuce UPSIDE-DOWN to probe the top 3-4” for rocks or roots that might spoil your poop-hole location; probing like this is a fantastic and unique feature of the Deuce; right-side-up, the scoop is large enough to quickly remove dirt; further into the hole, use it upside-down again to break up hard dirt and pry out rocks; it provides up to a 4x increase in digging power when used this way
  • Three models - all big enough to actually get some digging done: #1 is supremely ultralight at .45oz (equal to 2.5 TEASPOONS of water) for ultra-fanatics only; the #2 is the backpacking classic, .6 oz (about the weight of ONE TABLESPOON of water) for more normal weight fanatics (2.5 X 6.8 inches); and the #3, a .97oz beast; big, strong and capable of handling truly awful ground (2.6 X 8 inches); use the length to gauge the hole depth; 6” to 8” deep is the goal.
  • Made in the US and S. Korea of aerospace grade, US-produced 7075-T6 aluminum that meets the AMS4045 standard (the alloy alone does not guarantee high strength); the go-to aluminum for satellites and aircraft; HIGH STRENGTH aluminum makes high strength products; this grade of aluminum is available in only a handful of countries with technology and quality driven supply chains; manufacturer’s lifetime warranty
  • Tumbled and fully de-burred; smooth, rounded edges and shape is much more comfortable that angular shapes and raw die-cut edges
  • Anodized in fun colors to prevent corrosion and surface damage; prevents dark smudges from bare aluminum on your hands; have some fun, pick a color like you would a lolipop; these trowels really help you doo-doo the right thing; a great Leave No Trace aid

The Deuceof Spades(tm) Ultralight Backpacking Trowel is made in three models - each different in thickness, size and weight - but all are crazy-lightweight and made of extremely strong US-made aerospace grade 7075-T6 aluminum (strength that also allows tumbling and deburring, BTW). SIZE #1 - .45oz - 6.5"x2.4" - for EXTREME weight fanatics ONLY – those willing to work with the ins and outs of their gear to get the most out of it (be sure to see the directions in the photo section). SIZE #2 - .60oz - 6.8"x2.5" - The Backpacker's favorite version nicely straddles the line between weight fanaticism (.6 ounces - POINT six ounces!) and comfort. The original groundbreaking *ahem* trowel that was the first in the world that made for using upside down for probingand prying (see Advanced Techniques photo above). SIZE #3 - .97oz - 8"x2.6" - our full-sized trowel – bigger and stronger, a real beast that digs and prys easily, fast and comfortably - even in difficult rocky ground. Yet it weighs UNDER an ounce - a fraction of what other full sized trowels weigh. About our Manufacturing Please note that some Deuces are made in the US and some are made in Korea by DAC (the premier tent pole maker in the world). The quality and lifetime guarantee is exactly the same regardless of where your Deuce is manufactured. A quick glance at the photo or the color name will tell you where that exact model/color you've selected is manufactured.

Deuce of Spades are the most lightweight, best trowels on the market. The small size and light weight makes it ideal for backpacking. It’s also quite sturdy! Makes digging catholes or digging out ash in fire pits easy. I’ve even hit hard and rocky dirt and the trowel held up (even though I ultimately could not dig a sufficient cathole, BUT the trowel did not break or divot). Very functional, easy to use, and a great price, too.

I bought one of these for my recent section hike of the Pacific Crest Trail and ask you this question: If you’re planning a hike and you don’t have the Deuce of Spades Ultralight Backpack Trowel, are you even hiking?! At a featherweight 0.6 oz (17g), this trowel is so light that I almost forgot I was carrying it - until nature called, of course!Digging Deep: Let’s be honest, when you’re out in the wild, sometimes you need to dig a hole faster than a squirrel on caffeine. The Deuce of Spades is like the superhero of trowels—swift, efficient, and ready to save the day (or at least your dignity). I found myself channeling my inner archaeologist as I dug with this bad boy, unearthing nothing but the satisfaction of a job well done.Sturdy Yet Stylish: Made from high-quality materials, this trowel is tougher than it looks. I half expected it to sprout a cape and start flying around, but alas, it remained firmly in my hand, ready to tackle any terrain. It’s so sturdy that I’m convinced it could double as a makeshift weapon against any rogue critters trying to steal my snacks.Leave No Trace, Literally: The Deuce of Spades is not just a trowel; it’s a commitment to responsible hiking. With this tool, I felt like a true environmental warrior, ensuring that my “business” didn’t leave a trace.Versatile and Compact: This trowel is so compact that I could fit it in my pocket, which is great because you never know when you might need to dig a hole or, you know, defend yourself against an overly curious squirrel. In conclusion, if you’re heading out on the PCT or any other trail, do yourself a favor and grab the Deuce of Spades Ultralight Backpack Trowel. It’s lightweight, durable, and will make your backcountry bathroom breaks feel like a walk in the park (well, sort of). Trust me, your future self will thank you - especially when you’re not doing the “I need to find a spot” dance!

Works great! Super light but strong, if used correctly. I use it for wild harvesting roots & tubers as well as digging a latrine.

I was able to use it in my AT hike, but for southern FT a wag bag is better given that the only dry spots are campgrounds itself and I did not feel comfortable gigging cat-holes in the only dry spots available!!

When you need to dig a hole, this is the lightest affordable tool I've found. I put a plastic sleeve over the edges of the handle, which otherwise seem sharp and uncomfortable when digging in unforgiving soil.

This is the only spade that I have been using for the last couple years for backpacking. It seems a little different to talk about digging a hole for your poop in a review but that's what you're gonna be doing. This shovel is great it's super lightweight and super durable.

Brilliant trowel, but price is mad to buy I would wait for reasonable as other website cost 20-25 for #3 as all other website running out of stock so Amazon got this available for 32.50 pounds include devilery.I need it as im hiker with big fan of NLT And respectful to nature.it is worth big and light, plenty to dig down fast.Only thing annoy is hold it when dig still better performance that other trowel price X lightweight X quality dig all tick.Worth 5 stars for me. Maybe buy small version in future.
