This review is for UCTRONICS Male to Female GPIO Ribbon Cable 40pin. There isn't a lot to say about this cable, and that is actually a good thing. Everything was done right on the cable that I received. It has the correct pin connections on both connectors to extend a Raspberry Pi GPIO hat outside the case. The strain relief on the cables is decent and the plastic connectors are good. Really, there is no reason to have a color coded cable, but it does let you verify that the cable is wired correctly. It is kind of nice to look at instead of another dull grey ribbon cable. I'm using this cable with a GPIO breakout board HAT that has LEDs, so it was very easy to tell that the cable was wired correctly. The length is enough to get outside the case without a lot of extra to flop around or introduce noise on the signals. I won't put the top on my case, but this cable will fit nicely through a small slot that is open on at least one side. The connectors obviously won't fit through a slot the size of the ribbon cable unless it is at a seam between the top and bottom.

This GPIO ribbon works as you would expect. I will say is durable, as I had to modify it to work with my raspberry pi touchscreen by cutting the plastic shroud to fit. The plastic put up a decent fight. Everything fit as intended and the pins were stiff, as they should be.

First the minuses.(-) Multicolor cable is pointless and serves zero purpose other than to increase cost.(-) Breadboard is segmented and has two groups of power rails. The ad shows this but I missed it. This means if you want the power rails to be contiguous, you have to jumper them. More of an inconvenience than anything else but it does cost you 8 pin positions. (see my attached photo where I added red and black jumper wires )Pluses(+) Breakout board is narrower than most GPIO Breakouts and therefore gives access to three rows of pins on each side.(Blue board in my pics) Competitors products such as the Kuman board(Red board in my pics) are too wide and sacrifice a row of pin access by blocking two rows.(+) Board has separate power pins which plug directly into the power rails. This is a HUGE benefit because it eliminates the need to run power jumpers directly off the already crowded GPIO power and ground and makes wiring much simpler.(+) The board has an LED power light "H U G E!!!!" advantage because it gives you that extra confidence that you have the ribbon cable plugged in correctly and that you have power going to the breadboard rails. This alone is worth buying this product. I can't tell you how many times when I am swapping out breadboards I inadvertently plug in the ribbon cable backwards. This fixes that.Note: Most breakout board use the Kuman(Red board in my photo) method and make the board too wide and require you to sacrifice a row of pins. There are other's that have the power pins like this board but I don't think they have the LED power indicator light. There's only one thing I wish they had which only one manufacture I've seen ever produced. That would be the ability to jumper select whether or not the power pins are 3Vdc vs 5Vdc. Unfortunately the maker of that product was in England and went out of business.

I needed a second breadboard and this came with a few other extras that came in handy. All items are high quality and work well.

The "features" listed for this review seemed to be entirely unrelated to the function so were left blank. This item arrived quickly and made my prototyping efforts for the Raspberry Pi so much easier! The individual wires on the GPIO header can be difficult to work with and come loose easily. This gave a clean interface from the Pi to my breadboard for doing prototyping circuits. It also allowed for easy replacement and testing of different "models" of the Pi without having an unruly clump of wiring to contend with and sort. Very pleased.

I've been using the UCTRONICS GPIO Breakout Kits for an annual virtual marketing event for years now. These are anywhere from 36 to 50 people over zoom. The UCTRONICS ones have been my favorite since they have large and clear lettering plus they also get the +/- to the rails on the breadboards. But several times they've arrived with 2 different kinds of breadboards. If you want to keep the colors aligned on the voltage, the numbers might go right to left or go left to right. When that happens, we have to scurry and order other breadboards to swap them out. When you've got that many people learning remotely, everything has to be consistent, especially when you are trying to guide or debug. This last time I left a poor review because I was unhappy with this inconsistency. They reached out offering to fix the issue and asked for some details on my orders. It took me a few days to get all of the order numbers to them to validate I'd purchased as many as I said I had. (Some were ordered by the marketing firm and shipped to me for quality check and assembly.)I was going to go in and raise the review and add some more positives, but see they seem to have somehow gotten my initial review pulled. That to me is a bad sign. When a vendor gets reviews pulled then we can't trust them or the system. So here is the review again. I purchased multiples of these, and they are not consistent. It won't impact everyone, but it sure impacts my usage.

Found these for a costume I was building... I believe these would work great if I ever build a Raspberry Pie PC...but they were perfect for what I intended them to use on. Thanks!
