About this item

  • Full immersion thermometers need to be submerged deep enough so the desired temperature is at the meniscus
  • For example, if you wish to measure the temperature of a hot water bath to make sure it is 100°C
  • Partial immersion thermometers are useful if you have a shallow container which holds the substance to be measured

Red spirit-filled thermometers provide increased safety and economic pricing. They contain a petroleum-based column with red dye, which is significantly safer than mercury. These thermometers all have 6 to 7mm outer diameters, and the bulbs have equal or smaller diameters than the stems.

Imagine you're a kid hoped up on sugar-cubes in a science class. (I mean, what kid won't sneak some sugar cubes in between measurements?) You put your thermometer in the first liquid, and what does it do? NOT WORK. That's what. You try other liquids. The air. A boiling cup of water. NOTHING.So...when an adult is trying to get a back-up thermometer, you use said, nonfunctional thermometer as a drumstick. Because you're a kid.Let's just pray the "spirit" filling they mention (way to be vague and make us all really nervous) won't turn said kid into an actual spirit.Praying this is NON-TOXIC.And if it hadn't become the victim of an over-sugared kid, the thermometer definitely would have been returned.Failure rate of these thermometers? Based on the reviews, more than half? Garbage. Literal garbage.

I’d give zero stars if I could. We ordered for a science experiment and had to delay starting because the thermometer didn’t work at all. The red line was all the way at the top and didn’t move with extreme hot or cold. Completely defective.

We bought this to use for science experiments with our grandson. It worked great and was easy to read. Just be careful as it is glass!

Like other reviews have stated, our thermometer also arrived defective with the temp registering 90 degrees F inside our 68 degrees F house. Not eligible for return so just avoid buying in the first place.

Air bubbles between liquid in the thermometer—simply garbage.

Didn’t work right from the start. Red line at bottom and top but not even close to correct temperature.
