Information

Taps can be divided into straight flute thread taps, spiral flute thread taps, spiral point thread taps and thread forming taps. They are also divided into hand taps and machine taps according to the usage. Hand taps are operated by tap wrenches. Machine taps are suggested to be used with tap collets with overload protection. Recommended feed rate: General steel: 6-15m/min; harder steel: 5-10m/min; stainless steel: 2-7m/min; cast iron: 8-10m/min.

Tips

  • Machine taps are suggested to be used with tap collets with overload protection. Hand use or electric drills use is easy to cause breakage to the tap, so it is not recommended.
  • Use with tapping oil to get higher quality thread and more durable taps. Cutting oil is lubrication, cooling and anti-sticking. Be sure to select the appropriate cutting oil for complex tapping process and apply anti-rust oil for maintenance after use.

This tap is small and hard to hold. I chucked it into a 3/8 drill and used the drill to rotate the tap very slowly a couple of turns clockwise into a #50 drill hole in 1/8” aluminum plate. Then, I reversed the drill to slowly back out the tap so that I could clean off the chips with a small stiff brush. It took several more in and out cycles to get the hole threaded. A 2/56 screw went into the new threaded hole quite nicely.

This broke almost instantly. I know it’s a small tap but almost no pressure broke this and then I had to try and break it out so I could order another one.

This little tap works great! Easy to use and seems very durable so far! I've been using this with some tap fluid and must say I'm very happy with the results.

I ordered two 2-56 spiral point taps from Amazon as I needed tools fast. Both taps broke even though I used the proper drill size of #47 (.0785") with tapping oil. I would not recommend for tapping steel. Very brittle. Next time I will go to my usual tooling supplier.
