If you like to challenge your knitting skills, learn new stitches or create a beautiful intricate piece of fiber art then here is where to begin. Patterns of all types. Hats, coat sweaters, sweaters r all here. The challenge is in learning the stitches. I recommend reading the introductory chapter and then create swatches to learn the various cable stitches. This book is not for beginners but it detail in history and images gives anyone seeking help a fair start. Me I will be swatching!

I love this book, and have made several projects using the patterns. But it is not a book for every knitter, and certainly not for the new or casual knitter. For one thing, much of the book is taken up with archaeological discussion -- interesting, but those who buy the book just for the patterns may not feel they're getting their money's worth. Second, you really have to learn new skills to use it. I am a very experienced knitter, and can use both charts and traditionally-written directions, but it took me a while to grasp this new system (I wrote the code for the charts onto the page of each chart I used, and that helped). And, third, the sweaters themselves are not adaptable, simple, sized for everyone, or even necessarily suited for daily wear. All are very special, unusual designs -- the ball gowns of the sweater world -- and friends will say "Oh, you're wearing your Viking sweater!" every time you do.That said, let me also say that I submerged myself in Viking knitting for months after buying this book. The stitch patterns are like Aran cables, but they do not go from the top to the bottom in the usual way. Lavold has figured out how to get cables to twine all over the place -- even into medallion-ish closed shapes. I practiced the techniques and designs on slippers and hats and other small projects before attempting a sweater, and found them very usable for alll kinds of projects. If you knit enough to adapt patterns, you will find that the Viking designs will add interest to many other projects and patterns. And if you are a medium-sized person with dramatic tastes, you will love the sweaters, too. There are more than 14 projects altogether, including a cushion and afghan, one child's sweater, some coats, unisex and women's sweaters, and a number of smaller things like hats, socks, and mittens. All are beautiful and unusual.

The illustrations and patterns in this book are phenomenal. It's not just the Irish who have designed beautiful works of knotting and cables. Call this style "Cables with an Edge" in every sense of the phrase. And even if you aren't a sweater knitter just yet, these designs would work beautifully with scarves and blankets. Highly recommended!

This book is chockful of beautiful patterns, and has quite a bit of readable and fun viking facts. However, it assumes you already know certain things, like how to read charts. If you are new to knitting, I'd suggest you save this book for after you have a few projects under your belt.

This one was so interesting as reading the history of each pattern. Really liking the size and color choices that I can expand on.

As an "expert" knitter - I love this book. It does NOT, however, give size adjustments on patterns. But for the inspiration alone it is worth adding to your library. There are techniques and designs that can be adapted into other projects - I turned some into an afghan with Viking Dragon heads that sit up from the knit - awesome. Also, the runic alphabet is fun. I have found it fun to knit a person's name in runes across a scarf or bottom of a hat.

Good details and tips. I would caution on buying an e-version of the book as I found it almost unreadable. I then purchased a regular print copy and so much better.

The book has been around for a while, but the cable patterns are timeless! This designer is why I wanted to learn how to kit in the first place. The symbols in the charts are explained and I’d suggest photocopying the symbol chart in the back and keeping it with the cable charts. Sticky notes to mark which row in the chart you are on helps. Keep in mind many of the yarns the garments were knit in have been discontinued, but with a little exploring perfectly good substitutes can be found

Very interesting! The cover of the book caught my imagination which is why I bought it. It says "Inspiration and Projects for Today's Knitter" which I changed to "Inspiration for Projects" in my title for several reasons. I loved the knot work patterns and cables in this book and I enjoyed seeing the inspiration behind the designs. There are loads of ideas for creating your own designs and patterns to be found in this book. Personally I don't like dropped shoulder knitwear and a number of the patterns are made this way. Some of them are also baggy which is not my bag but may actually be yours. I could see how it would be easier for a novice to knit this way as the cabled patterns are complete and so should encourage knitters new to cabling to give it a try.The patterns and ideas in this book are great and I can see myself using this book as a reference for ideas for a long time. The garment styles are different and the ideas worth looking at if you want something not run of the mill. While I may not knit the patterns as they are printed in this book I will certainly use the style ideas for future projects. I can see a little of something in this book for all levels provided you are not faint of heart and want to learn something new and interesting. Perhaps you too can be inspired to design your own garments.
