I am an intermediate knitter in my skill set, but only a beginner when it comes to knitting garments. My first garment was the Einstein Coat by Sally Melville in The Knitting Experience. So I was really thrilled to find another book that offers a similar type of pattern like a saddle knit.Knitting Saddle Style had excellent clear directions and photos. Really a nice knitting book for garments. The reason I am giving it a 4 star rating is that I am not overly crazy about the styles--they are a little plain. This was disappointing because from the cover pictures I expected the patterns would be more exciting and hip. But for basic sweaters they are ok. I imagine that once I learn the concept, I can create my own patterns with more texture and style.

very good, very explanatory with lots of ideas for bringing your own styles to the fore. I have been knitting for 40 years and this has brought in a new dimension

I purchased this and another title by the same author. This book downloaded fine EXCEPT: the whole thing is in black and white. In addition the print is "wonky" - with some pages only containing 3 -5 very large words irregularly splayed across the page. As any knitter knows: Charts that are supposed to be in color DON'T WORK IN BLACK AND WHITE!! Plus - the photos are not intended to be shown in black & white so it is difficult to see the garment details. When I sent an inquiry to Amazon regarding the problems with my download their response in a nutshell was : "TOUGH!"No help at all. AND they seemed to think that I was being overly picky that I had gotten a "book in black and white print".So buyer beware: sometimes the Kindle version works, and sometimes you are just wasting your money!!

I love this book. Now that's my personal overall impression. Here are reasons why you might like it too. The designs are relatively flattering. There are designs for men that most men would find wearable. There is a nice range of sizes including a few patterns that go up to a 50" bust. Most of the designs could qualify as wardrobe basics, and there are sweaters, vests, sleeveless vests, one tank top, a couple sweaters for children, some aran designs. Almost all of them look nice, even though a few of them are sported very short (above the hip bone) which to me is unatractive. It's easy to remedy though and doesn't impair my enjoyment of the patterns. Most of the stitch patterns are simple, (i.e. easy) with the exception of the arans that remain pretty classic cable variations. An interesting fact is that the author includes a section with advice for machine knitters. Not useful to me, and I can't judge the contents, but maybe machine knitters will find these tidbits to their taste. My favourite design appears on the cover, it its the tumbleweeds sleeveless vest for women. My least favourite design is a textured tank top called "blue bonnets" that is garanteed to make your bust look like it just grew three cup sizes. The combination of the texture, the armhole shaping and the short length of the garment makes it very dubious this will ever make anyone compliment the wearer. Not to mention it is not a saddle style garment at all.The author acknowledges this in the pattern introduction, and has the good grace not to count it in the twelve sweaters, but still couldn't resist slipping it in. I guess it was just one of those pet projects, I will try to consider it as a sort of Easter egg.Still a very worthy addition to the knitting pattern library who has it all, almost...
