Admiral Fitzroy, the famous sailor and meteorologist, mounted an instrument similar to the storm glass on the mast of HMS Beagle as a storm warning instrument during his historic voyage with Darwin in the 1830s. They initially didn't send the plaque along with it. Customer service responded right away and fixed the issue by sending the plaque out immediately. Very high quality build!

This is a great device from a great company. It's solidly built, plaque, brass, everything is as advertised. You can argue about the accuracy of it or the principles of how it works, whether it's a mystery or just a gimmick. My review of 2 stars is not based on that. I like it and I wanted it for a while. I put it in my office and it looks great. I read about it online, and wanted to check it out for myself.My review is based solely on mounting options. You have two options to mount it, with or without the plaque. If you would like to stand this device on its own without the plaque, no problems, there is an easy option to convert it and discard the plaque and to mount the plaque without the storm glass. If you want to stand the device and the plaque without mounting it, there is a metal stud that acts as a stand, both vertical and horizontal. Doesn't make sense to stand this plaque vertically, but in case you wanted it, you could. Again, no problems.However, if you want to mount this on the wall as the picture shows, get ready to be challenged. See, the storm glass itself is pretty heavy, and the plaque doesn't account for its weight. So when you put it up, it swings to the side under the weight of the storm glass. I eventually got it to stay upright by drilling 3(!) holes in the wall. Not what I had in mind when I started. For a device that costs close to $200 dollars, you would expect a hassle free option. A mounting bracket or weight distributed holes would be a nice an inexpensive option.Really sloppy design from such a respected company.

It's for decoration and it's very sturdy.I suppose if you watch the trend of the cloud you can anticipate, generally, the weather--but it looks great.

We bought this a long time ago. We out of town and 1000 feet above town, our weather is different up here. It took a week or two to settle in but has worked great ever since. Don't shake it or it will take longer to start to form. It changes only when there is dramatic weather changes. It works great as a reminder before we get frost or bad weather to button things up.
