Like the wooden yarn swift, this yarn ball winder / maker works very well, and does not need the clamp to hold it steady. The craftsmanship in the construction aids in creating the perfect ball of yarn regardless of whether it is lace weight or chunky. Well worth the cost as compared to the other plastic models! Ditch plastic and go old style - wood!

i this machine is beautiful and worked well for about a month, then a screw came loose and i must break down the entire machine to tighten it while this screw must remain free to spin. it’s the modern steel parts that failed of course. 😒

My wife had one of the cheaper plastic yarn ball winders that I got for her a few years ago, and it worked... okay... until it ate some rather pricey artisan yarn. It somehow fell off the spindle to be pulled into the housing, which I could tell was never meant to be opened up to fix something like this.So... I came here and looked for another yarn ball winder, wanting a more open design so that if something like that did go wrong again, it would be easier to fix. At a glance, this design seemed to fit the criteria, and this particular brand seemed to have a significantly higher rating than most. And, I'm making more money than when I got her the plastic one.It arrived today - quite a bit faster than expected. And, I promptly put it together for my wife while our two year old ran interference. So, it's worth noting that it's easy enough to assemble, even with a two year old running interference, playing with it and its parts while I try to put it together. My wife eagerly tried it out, winding some yarn I got her as a gift for her recent birthday, and gave her 5 star approval. I included a picture just of the winder and swift, and one of the winder with the ball she wound on it.The only bad things? The instructions weren't that great for the winder, and the swift had no instructions. Thankfully, it was still pretty easy and intuitive to put together (I did look at product photos when the instructions weren't clear to me), and my wife knew what to do with it once I put everything together. One last suggestion - if I remember, this had the option to order with or without the swift. If you're getting it as a gift, get it with the swift - whoever you're getting it for will thank you.

Four stars is what a realist gives.A really useful tool for a knit / crochet enthusiast. I’ve been a needlecraft / yarn person for most my life, and nearing 40 I can say, damn, I really did need one of these. But perhaps, only later on in my fiber life.If you’re new to knitting or crochet, you don’t need one. Periodt! This is for those people who buy hand dyed yarns, and fuss over dye lots. For those who know that Red Heart Brand yarn is crap, and that animal and vegetable fiber is superior to arcylic and other petroleum-based faux fiber.I researched winders and swifts, and these are your three main choices: Cool Looking (this product), expertly designed and appreciated (Standwood for example), or rare and antique. You can easily apply a range of costs to those three choices.I opted for sex appeal and shelf interest. I asked myself: Am I going to spend my days endlessly making hanks of yarns into cakes? (If you don’t understand any that you don’t need this) Or, am I going to wish I didn’t have to hand wind 12 skeins of yarn for a sweater after I bought them in bulk online and have no where’s locally to provide the winding service.Well made. Sturdy. If you pay attention to how these work, it’ll be breeze to assemble. If you’re not mechanically inclined you may feel mad at the assembly instructions. If you’re a true knitter, you understand how to interpret.Lastly, the little bottle of machine oil is straight gasoline. My machinist husband, and myself S a novice in garage grease, can attest that whatever they put in that tiny bottle with the yellow lid to “grease†or “oil†or the moving parts, is straight gasoline. Sniff it. I dare you. It’s gasoline. Better off using coconut oil.†And if you use it enough, your hands and true animal fiber will oil it for you.

I purchased this item in June 2024. It worked fine - the first time. Made a great cake. Hasn’t worked well since. Makes lopsided cakes without the cross-hatch normally found with ball winders. Also makes cakes with a large portion sticking out from the top or bottom what are just a straight wind. I wish I hadn’t bought it. I’m going to stay with my nostepinne. Takes more time but the cakes come out nicer.

Balls the yard great. bought a sewing machine table at thrift store to mount it in.Only complaint would be the oil should be inside a sealed bag, it leaked out. Didn't get over anything, just empty bottle, and some damp packing.

I got this as a b-day gift to myself and the real gift was not having to deal with knotted yarn ever again! (mostly)

Very disappointed in this product, I was very excited to receive this but within an hour of its delivery I realised it is unusable. There is no clamp to attach it to a table as described, the handle is not screwed in at all and lifts out (despite it being a screw). I have been unable to wind even a single ball as the winder dowel is not locked in place and therefore spins with the winding and prevents the wool from wrapping around the dowel.

Wenn man zu Beginn den Faden zwei/dreimal mittig händische um die Rolle windet, läuft es danach reibungslos mechanisch und erfüllt meine Erwartungen.

Bought for my wife who initially wanted to unravel an existing project and restore to balls of yarn. The build quality is really good. Threaded inserts for screwing parts together, metal bearing surfaces and even a small tube of machine oil to lubricate. The table clamp is flexible for different table thicknesses and it even comes with a spare turntable drive belt. After the first ball which was a bit looser than she'd have liked, everything after was nice and tight and exactly what she was looking for. My only quibble was that the instructions differed in small details from the device supplied - so I had to do a little inference. The biggest challenge was setting up the rotating yarn spindle against the spindle. This required a little bit of intuition alongside the instructions to make it sit properly. Also my wife nudged the device in use so it "wouldn't work" until I explained to her how to reseat the yarn spindle assembly. But aside from those minor quibbles it is very well built, works well and I suspect it's a lot better value than the cheaper plastic ones.
