Y-Strainers are regarded in the plumbing community as "insurance" to protect and filter out any debris or water softener resin beads (which was my main reason for purchasing this) from your valuable plumbing system components like a PRV, water softener, or your internal home plumbing fixtures and supply line hoses. Please keep in mind if you are considering a Y-Strainer, no matter what size you elect to go with, you will introduce a slight flow restriction (reduction) to your overall home's natural PSI water flow rate from the main because of the mesh wire acting as a very light barrier to filter sediment from your water supply line as it moves through your system. The larger you go, the less restrictive it is. Zurn actually has a really great chart showing what you can expect the resulting pressure drop to be based on your home's psi measurement (you have to measure this at your spigot to find out what your house produces) and the size pipe fitting of the Y-Strainer itself. I personally chose to go with the 1in strainer because my house psi is 75psi, and according to the chart provided by Zurn, the 3/4 inch strainer would be far more restrictive on my internal plumbing water pressure (roughly 8-10psi drop) than a larger unit like 1in. The 1in unit chart showed a 1-2psi drop at most which literally is complete unnoticeable unless you REALLY pay attention to it. Either way, the unit is awesome, no leaks, pressure feels exactly the same it did prior to install, and it was a breeze to install (no leaks at all) after the water softener to prevent any potential future resin beads breaking through the softener and trying to get into my internal plumbing. Highly recommend this product to anyone looking to protect their plumbing components.

My pool's autofill system started to leak and given the 11 year age, I decided to replace the entire backflow assembly (pic). The Zurn 34-SXL Lead-Free 20 Mesh Screen Strainer Stainless Steel, 0.75 Inch (red circle) is a key component in that assembly and was a breeze to install and worked great out of the box. For amateur DIYers like me, the flow arrow points downstream (away from water source) and make sure to use nylon tape and plumbers putty, connecting from the water source to the pool side so all connections are tight. Overall happy with this product and expect to get another decade+ of worry-free use out of it. Highly recommend.

I use a lot of these, putting one on your water supply really helps make your plumbing system work better. It is especially useful to have one AFTER a water softener and BEFORE a tankless water heater. I'm an industry pro and have been using these for decades.

Compare this Zurn on the left to the Chinese ones on the right - and yes these are all 3/4"!The screen is recessed in the body for full flow. The Chinese ones the screen is flush with the outlet hole.Yes, more $, but you're paying for the brass. I was hoping to save $ with the $10 Chinese strainers, no dicem sent them back.

Leaked from the minute it was installed. Had to replace with one from local hardware store. Unfortunately shipping cost to return it is more than the item so it became scrap metal.
