I got these for making quick holes in planting beds, but wanted to test them in some hard packed clay soil on my property. All 3 sizes cut through the tough soil like a hot knife through butter, but they did take some getting use to in order to use them correctly. The good thing was I paired these with a variable speed drill that also had a reversing function. I state this because the first hole I drilled with the smallest bit went so fast it pulled the drill down to the ground level up to the chuck. If the drill didn't have reverse I most likely would have to dig the bit out of the ground. Basically what I learned was don't drill too fast nor push too hard. The practice holes I made with the 2 smaller bits went in easily, but using the bigger bit popped out a bunch of rocks from my rocky soil. Probably best to drill smaller holes first, then finish with the largest bit especially when using in poor soil conditions. My only complaint is why didn't they make the hexagonal part of the shaft slightly longer so more of it could fit into the drill chuck. I was worried that the shaft could possibly bend or get yanked from the chuck, especially on the longer bits, if hitting an obstacles in the ground while drilling a hole. Other than that these should work fine for my intended purpose.

This is a good set for basic planting needs. You really only need the 2 and 3" bits. 2 for seeds 3 for bulbs, but it's nice there was a 1.6 just in case. I prefer the length of the longer augers anyway. I've really only used these in planter boxes so I wasn't having to move any difficult soil or get through clay, but they made short work of the soil. I haven't decided if it's faster to use a hand trowel, but if you have limited hand strength a tool like this may be a game changer.

The angle of the auger at the tip is not designed in such a way that it will easily keep pulling dirt up. They will only dig holes a few inches deep through the more soft topsoil layer and the second they hit dirt that is a bit more compact, that's it, can't get them to go deeper. Good idea, but badly designed!

A few years ago, I got a single garden auger for planting and digging holes in our yard with a drill. We have compacted clay soil with a lot of rocks, and when I tried to dig a couple of holes with a spade, whether I swung it or stomped at it, the shovel just bounced off and the dirt just laughed. But with a cordless drill, these augers make quick work of getting a hole started that you can clean up with a shovel. Be careful! If you go fairly deep, it's easy to get bound up where your drill just stops, but I swapped my 12V Black & Decker for my daughter's 24V Kobalt and about broke my wrist.Highly recommend - when I ordered these, the whole set was under $10.

This set of three auger bits is super at digging down into the dirt. A lot of augers are made only to work well with a particular motor to drive them, but this set all connect to any standard power drill! This is a major bonus. The bits will dig into even the most clay-textured earth with ease. Go SLOWLY with a power drill or you'll find yourself screwing the auger into the ground like a mega-screw instead of using it to dig a hole, and you'll have to back it out and do it again. I had the best luck digging down a handful of inches, then pulling the auger out of the hole while running the drill faster, to clear the debris dirt from the hole before going back down to excavate a handful more inches and clearing it out again.Highly effective, much easier than digging with any of the non-powered alternatives like a post hole digger, spade, shovel, mattock, etc.

My wife re-plants a lot of bulbs in the spring and I've told her multiple times that she should consider a getting a small auger to make it go quicker. I have a good quality DeWalt cordless drill that should have no problem running these augers. If that can't drive them, I can break out a large corded drill for her.The design of the augers I received was slightly different from the product pictures, most noticeably with the large 3-inch auger having a conical tip instead of a "drill-bit" tip. I don't know if this is better or worse. The smaller-diameter bits have a slight difference in that the guide tips seem a little shorter than the product photos by about a half-inch. I don't see this as being a big problem though. One other thing I noticed is that the welding job on these is pretty awful. The auger blades are only welded to the shaft in a few spots and I see signs that they welded this very quickly. There are clear signs of voids and cold welds in different spots and they made no attempt to grind off extra material. I really question if these will survive heavy use.Since the ground is currently frozen, we really can't test these, so I guess we will see what happens in the spring, but for now I am taking one star for the mediocre welding job.

This is a review for a set of 3 drill bit extensions which acts as augers. The flutes were wide set and didn't have any problems leaving perfect holes as deep as I could possibly need. They held up fine during use and didn't feel unbalanced or weak. Each hole only took seconds.
