1. Measure the distance that you want the Spring Divider to be set
2. To lock a measurement in place, turn on the speed nut that is located on the centering collar to the desired measurement.
3. Begin doing repeat measurements without repeatedly using a ruler/measuring tape!

For years I have been getting by with cheap, inexpensive, Compasses that were hard to work with and prone to breakage and inaccuracies. This ALLY Tools 8-inch Precision Compass is a super tool. It holds its measurement tightly through a full circle, is easy to fit with a pencil or marking pen, and is heavily constructed. I wish I had bought one years ago. It would have made my DIY projects much easier and quicker. Excellent tool.

Well built sturdy tool. The one problem I had was the points on the feet should be on the outside of the legs instead of the inside.It makes it hard to use as a divider. Other than that, they're very good.

The compass arrived in two days but upon opening I found that the top pin was missing. I contacted the company and they sent me a replacement same day. Very good construction and easy to use. Excellent choice if you're needing a quality compass at a great price.

I searched all over town for a larger-sized compass. Came home and found and ordered this one. I'm glad I did! It came so fast, and it's all that it described. I'm a calligrapher and needed this to be able to draw large, precise spirals for lettering. These feet stay in place. The provided pencil works well, and it adjusts easily with one hand.

This compass is ok for what it is, but there are a couple of things that detract from a good product. Firstly, they claim this has a speed nut to permit quick settings - it does not. It had a thumb nut adjustment, but it will not slip on the threads if you take off the pressure and try to tilt the nut.Secondly, as others point out, the spreader pins are riveted and, if you use this a lot, I'd expect the adjustment to get sloppy over time.Finally, the retaining screw for the pencil is thin and the tap in the pencil holder is very loose, again, making me wonder how long this will last.We won't talk about the pencil quality...As I said, this is usable for me, but I would have preferred a better quality tool.
