The hinge is plastic so it's not a highly precise instrument. The tips did not perfectly align so I trimmed/sanded the long one down about 0.5mm and now it's perfect. It's inexpensive so I would purchase again because I love the size and it's more robust than the 100% plastic ones. I use it for art pencil drawings.

I bought this ALVIN Academic Proportional Gearhead Divider for measuring proportions and angles for when I draw. I can’t attest to the longevity of it, but I can say that it appears to be well made, and works exactly as I hoped it would. It holds itself steady at the measurement I have it in until I move it. The very tips of the top are very pointy and sharp, so take care to keep it away from curious littles. I will probably buy a second one to put in my traveling art kit.

Complete Junk, went to use it and the needle was broken. You get what you pay for.
