Excellent quality material, easy to use and worth paying for its excellent item After spending money on cheap plastic compasses this type of staedtler is worth it, a good addition to the school supplies for middle and high schoolers.

Husband saw this and I knew I was never going to see it again unless I got him his own. What can you say - it's Staedtler - high quality, it feels good to use. And this one is really easy to use - I was using one from a professional artist that was very high quality - but you needed an engineering degree to set it, change the tips, never mind inking with it.The Staedtler model has a great pen holding attachment that fits Sakura Micron pens, as well as others. It also has a quick release, so you don't have to spin the dial if you're changing sizes by a large amount. And the legs have that cool hinge feature - which I haven't used much, but it's still cool!My only complaint - and it's a small one - the very nice storage case, that holds all the accy securely - has a molded plastic liner (with some type of flocking to prevent scratching) but you have to re-adjust the compass legs almost exactly to get it to fit back in it's 'outline'...I wish they'd just made a big triangular depression or something. But that's a small disappointment for an other wise fab piece of equipment.

Durable, useful for real work. Not a toy for little kids like the plastic ones sold for $4. This will last and is much more accurate/precise.

Very wobbly when trying to draw small diameter circles. The plastic parts deflect more than I would think is reasonable.

There is nothing worse than reading mixed reviews of an item and deciding which reviews are using poor judgement. The major complaint from the poor reviews are the screws won't tighten. If the screw was stripped, then they received a defective item but that's unlikely. Possible, but unlikely. In order to tighten the screw, one most hold the screw in place with the thumb, while tightening the nut. Otherwise, one will have troubles tightening the compass needle or the pencil. Once you figured out that piece of engineering, then you realize, it's not the compass, but the user. Given most of the compasses, despite different brands, are exactly the same design (then there is no avoiding this little piece of engineering) . The other complaint is that some of the compass is plastic. It doesn't require Einstein to examine both the marketing photo's, and the features listed at the top of the page (plastic and metal) to know what you're ordering. It's dishonest to complain that it's plastic after you ordered something that is listed as partially plastic. There is no play in the plastic and it's sturdy. There is a vast difference between, I don't like it and it is defective. Conclusion: Compass works fine. No issues with accuracy. You'll find youtube video's with individuals creating great geometric art with this compass. But for what it is, I think it's a bit over priced so I took a star off as well as not having any directions that tells you how to tighten the screw. It wasn't obvious to a couple of reviewers and I had to play with it to figure it out.

Many years ago I was a survey draftsman, back when humans rather than computers drew plans. I probably have most of my old stuff packed away somewhere but... I got this compass for sewing, I like making things like canvas buckets and duffle bags that have round ends. I had an inexpensive compass on my sewing table but got tired of fighting with it. Staedtler was a good name 35 years ago and continues to make a quality product. This compass has worked great for me and having the extension bar will come in handy when I do something bigger.

First, this seems to be a revised version from the original 552's. The legs are indeed metal but the button releases, hinge, and pencil adapter are all plastic. The pencil adapter is what's most important to me, since I want to use different drawing instruments with the compass. That adapter fit too loosely inside the compass for it to grip fully. I had to take a small piece of cardstock and put it in there as a shim in order to get it to hold. This is not what I'm accustomed to getting from Staedtler, I'm usually a big fan of their products. However, it's not worth returning as there aren't many alternatives available that meet my needs.

Premetto che ho avuto modo di provare molti compassi di tante marche e tipologie differenti, e devo ammettere che questo prodotto è realizzato e assemblato con cura e con materiali di buona qualità .Rispetto ad altri prodotti simili ho riscontrato un'ottima stabilità nel mantenere l'apertura, cosa non scontata negli altri prodotti che spesso hanno un eccessivo gioco nella vite di regolazione.La scatola contiene tutti gli accessori indispensabili per un disegnatore, in quanto è presente la prolunga per i cerchi grandi, un portamine e lo strumento per l'utilizzo dei pennini e delle penne ad inchiostro.Consiglio il prodotto a tutti coloro che sono alla ricerca di un ottimo compasso completo di tutti gli accessori.
