I had never touched a refractometer before I received this one. The instructions said that distilled water is used to calibrate one of these instruments. So, I took a drop of tap water and placed it on the test area. I did look through it before placing the drop of water on the test area, and the whole visible field was a pleasant shade of blue, kind of like looking and the sky, with various black printed scales visible against the blue background. When I looked through it after putting the drop of water on it, it still showed a blue background but down at the bottom of the center scale, which is zero on the vertical specific gravity scale, there was a horizontal division with blue background above and clear below. The horizontal line went right through the zero line on the center scale. Very easy to read, no ambiguity at all. The instructions are very clear and easy to read. I plan to use this instrument to check antifreeze concentration and the state of charge of lead acid batteries.

If you do a coolant flush, there is always plain water left behind. This tool allows you to make sure you reach 50% concentration. I would always guess and use a float type meter which is never accurate.
