I know this tape is supposed to be used to help water protect decks and such. However, this tape is very similar to the super expensive flex type tapes. The butyl adhesive is waterproof and makes the tape extremely hard to remove. So, there are so many uses for this tape. I even repaired a leak on an inflatable stand-up paddleboard.

I’m putting in a 1500 sqft deck and first up is two 90 foot beams for the joists to sit on. There are three layers of 2x12 per beam. So about 580’ of butyl tape has gone down so far. This is just the start, because I’ll have a LOT of 15’ joists sitting across the beams to cover. So I’m experimenting with different types of tape from different suppliers. See below for what I’ve learned so far from laying out 12 rolls of tapeMy rating for the tape- Minus 1 star if it takes me more than 30 seconds to unwrap it (if 80% of the tape roll covers come off in two or three pieces, then having to pick 20+ pieces of wrapping off it not acceptable)- Minus 3 if I need to repeal the backing more than 3 times due to it fraying- Minus 1 if the tape feels too thin (so far, only with the 1 5/8” tape)This tape acted as I expected it to. Five stars for that.Thoughts1. If you can find it and afford it, buy 2” tape. It unrolls easier, it stretches easier, and it feels like it will still be there in a year. 1 5/8” may work for single boards, but I was not as impressed as I hoped to be when working with multiple boards (3 ply)2. Unroll a bit, stick it at one end of the wood v-make sure you do NOT stretch this part! . Stretch the remaining tape so that when you put it on the wood it will stick. And, when you go back to smooth it out, you won’t have any lumps3. Go overboard on the overlap of tape when / if laying down two or more strips of tape (e.g. with my 3 ply 2x12s). The cold of the night / heat of the next day will show you if you skimped.4. Once you’ve laid out your 50’ of tape, use the empty roll to smooth out the tape and ensure bonding with the wood. Use a leather glove or similar to bond any tape overlap to the side of the beam/truss (run your hand/finger along)

$10 for 50 ft, or $0.20/foot is an okay price for decent joist tape.

We are redoing our deck and replacing the old pressure treated decking with composite. Many of the videos I watched recommended using joist tape to help protect the joists and provide a longer life. I ordered several brands and most of the seem pretty much the same. This brand was pretty easy to apply. I just rolled it out as I went down the joist, making sure to pull the plastic protection strip off as I went along. I then went back over it with my hand to smooth it down and make sure it was adhering well. Seemed to be adhered pretty well. As you can see from the picture, it did a great job of repelling the rain. You can reposition it if you don't get it down even on the first try. Just need to make sure it doesn't fall back on itself of another piece of tape as it is very stick and hard to pull off of another piece of tape.

Don't even think twice about whether or not you should use joist tape when using today's lumber, yes you should! Even more important when you are replacing existing deck boards due to all the screw or nail penetrations through the joists and making it so much easier for water to penetrate and rot your lumber. Today's lumber is forested so rapidly that there is hardly any density to the wood and moisture will destroy it quickly, so adding this layer of protection is a no-brainer. Doesn't matter if you dress-coat your deck with today's composite boards that will last for 50-plus years if you don't protect the support structure. Do it!!!!- This tape was sticker than even some of the name brands I have used in the past.- Removing the clear backing is always a chore with this kind of tape but I haven't used a brand that isn't- A joist is about 1 5/8" wide so this tape gives you a little play when lining it up- One roll is 50' and you will go through it, but like I said it is worth every penny to protect your investment

I installed this tape on new deck joists and had to stop for the day before laying down decking. It rained that night and the next morning the edges, where the tape overlaps the joist, had lifted on about 50% of them. Not a big deal, since the tape is thick enough to staple down the edges. I actually recommend that you staple down the edges anyway since the overlaps could lose adhesion over time and act as a ledge to hold water.
