About this item

  • For use with CGE, CPC, Advanced GT and NexStar Series telescopes

The hobby of amateur astronomy frequently takes the observer away from sources of AC power. After all, we are always in pursuit of the darkest skies possible, and that often means going off the grid. The most common way to power your telescope in these situations is to use a portable 12V battery pack, like the Celestron PowerTank, or to use power from your car’s battery via the cigarette lighter. The Celestron Car Battery Adapter is the accessory required for connecting any Celestron computerized telescope to a DC power supply or car battery. Plug the round post into the 12V input jack on the drive base of your telescope, and insert the power connector into the cigarette lighter outlet in your car or on your power supply. The cord is 25 feet long, giving you plenty of reach between your telescope and 12V power source. The barrel connector can be sued with any telescope that uses a receptacle with an outside diameter of 5.5 mm and an inner diameter of 2.1 mm and a “tip positive” polarity. For use with the following telescopes: NexStar SLT Series NexStar GT Series CGEM Series CPC Series CPC Deluxe Series Advanced VX Series

This cord works as expected with my Celestron telescope. The cord is long enough to run it from your vehicle as needed.

Nice sturdy cord, plugged right into my Celestron 130SLT and Celestron Power pack. Telescope fired right up!

I bought this cable to replace the one that came with our CPC 925, which we use with a 20AH field battery. The original power cord failed after two years, developing an intermittent connection where the wire enters the plug housing at the telescope end. This was especially annoying because I always loop the cable thru the fork arm handle to provide extra strain-relief, so the original cable was never yanked or stressed at the point where it failed. This new cable is made a bit differently, so I won't know if it's better or worse until it's been through a couple of temperature extremes. One difference is the type of cable used. The new one uses something similar to zip cord or speaker wire, while the original had both conductors enclosed in a round outer jacket that was softer and more flexible. The new DC plug is a straight type, rather than the right-angle plug on the original, which I liked. However, the new plug seems beefier and appears to have a much better strain-relief, so we'll see how well it holds up. The cigarette lighter plug is identical on both cables, except the new one lacks the original's red LED power indicator. Unlike the molded plug on the other end, this one can be easily removed & replaced, so I might swap them. I'll plan on updating this review after the new cable completes its first winter of use.UPDATE (Feb 2015): I'm a bit late with this follow-up, but happy to report that after 5-1/2 years of regular use, this cable is still good-as-new. Just like the original cable that came with the scope, I keep this one wrapped on a . This ensures it never gets tangled or dragged on the pavement. I also continue to loop it thru the scope's fork handle in a loose knot to provide extra strain relief in case the anti-cordwrap goes awry (or I forget to turn it on).It must be noted that Celestron may be using a different supplier for this cable than for the one I purchased several years ago, so your mileage may vary. As Patrick Niemeyer mentioned in his comment below, the cable currently being offered does, in fact feature an LED indicator on the cigarette lighter end. The photo also shows a knurled locknut on the scope end, which my cable does not have. The locknut would not do anything for me, since the 12V jack on my CPC does not have any exposed threads and I'm not inclined to take the scope apart just to remount the jack. Still, if the new version of this cable proves as durable as mine, it would certainly be worth five stars. The price has also dropped several dollars since I bought mine.

This cord is about 20 ft long. Works great! Just roll the window down in your car and never worry about fiddling with batteries again. I took this with me for the first time a couple weeks ago. My wife raved all night about how long it was. I am not one to brag, but it is pretty long. It got the job done and everyone went home satisfied. It slides in easily and won't come out until you want it to. Add it to your kit, you won't regret it! Now I don't have to drag around a heavy power tank as long as I can setup my scope with in about 20 feet of my car. Good quality and it fit my NexStar 6SE perfectly. Sturdy as they come.

This is a quality cable, with the seldom seen "Locking Style" coaxial power plug at the telescope end. Celestron lists it as the power chord for the NexStar, among others.Sadly, while it "fits", the NexStar's Jack is not the correct mate to this plug, and it fails to engage the "Lock" - which is the main feature this cable promises. The lock is needed on the NexStar otherwise power will drop out intermittently as the telescope moves in RA.It was necessary to replace the power jack in the NexStar, with a longer (deeper) variation before the lock engages. Once done, it's beautiful, and power is steady under all conditions with this cable.I'm happy to have done this, and rate the purchase highly - but it wouldn't be fair to do so without setting expectations a bit. Now you know -

Yes, it fits the power connection on Celestron NexStar scopes like C4 SE and C8 SE. But the "securing screw" head is nearly impossible to turn with human fingers! Can't get it to secure on either my C4 SE or my C8 SE. The problem is that if it is not secured then any movement by the rotating base of the scope (or any other accidental tug on the cable) results in the plug coming out and the scope powering off. AAAARGH ! Celestron, you can do better !

Had bought a spurious one off eBay before and it just didn’t work. May have been a fuse or a damaged but if cable but it wasn’t worth fixing. Got this one and it worked perfectly with my car battery charger from Halfords which is a lot cheaper than the power tank. All works perfectly. Would highly recommend

My first use of the telescope was with 8 AA Nimh batteries which needed deep recharge after a couple of hours of use. Fumbling job replacing two 4-battery battery modules by the light of a dim red headlamp with black-cased AA cells and cold fingers. Don't recommend it. Was a great motivator to finding 'a better way'.The car batter adapter worked perfectly with the first use. Unfortunately, when the azimuth drive decided 350 degree rotations were the most efficient way to find the requested celestial objects of interest, I soon found the cord wrapped a couple of times around the telescope mount. Finally had to unplug (and therefore needed to realign) the telescope. Lesson learned. On the plus side, it provided all the power I needed for extensive viewing sessions with little noticeable drain on the 12-volt heavy duty power pack battery booster. The cord is long enough to set up in a parking lot and use the car's accessory outlet for power. I didn't notice any difference in performance between AA batteries [high-drain capable; normally use these for photo flash applications] and the much larger lead-acid cells. Connectors and cord are quality parts. This accessory will last many years.
