I love these tools, they create beautifully smooth surfaces. I use them for shaping, after trimming, and making glaze application uniform after dunking with tongs. I thought they came in different sizes but they are both the same.

A knock-off of the Rib made by MudTools, the most used tool in many potters’ tool boxes. While very similar to MudTools rib these are much more affordable. There are other imitations offered on Amazon, but I have found these to be the most flexible and interchangeable with MudTools red rib material. The only drawback to ribs like these is that they seem to disappear, usually in the slop or someone else’s tool box.

i’m a painter and am always looking for new tools to apply/spread paint on my canvas/paper/wood surface. so i thought i’d try some of these out. what i like about them is that they are silicone and small sized; they are easy to grip and flexible for making interesting marks. but if you are solely looking for something to spread paint in straight lines, its flexibility can be challenging. a firmer/stiff plastic or silicone would work better for that purpose. i like these as just one more tool in the tool chest for markmaking. i’ll need to play with them more to figure out exactly how to use them best. but i’m happy to have them. (i can’t speak to how they work for clay purposes.)

At the time of this review, many popular MudTools items remain on backorder due to the fallout from Hurricane Helen so I decided to take a chance on this purported dup to replace a rib that I'd lost and really miss. Bad idea. The real MudTools red ribs are rubbery smooth and highly flexible so you can burnish and smooth even tight spaces. This dup, on the other hand is very rigid, with rather sharp plastic edges. If I were to try to bend this like a MudTools rib, it would snap. This is going back to Amazon, and in the meantime, I will be waiting for MudTools to recover so I can get the real thing from them.

I am a college student taking ceramics courses. I bought a kit of tools that included a metal rib and a wooden rib. The metal one was flexible but my prof would not allow its use as it becomes dangerously sharp. These silicone ribs were perfect for my needs and made for very smooth surfaces. I may have to buy them again because apparently my classmates liked them too. :)

Stiffer than mudd tools. Has a sharp edge, which is nice but may not last. Good for the time being and nice for the price.
