If you are in need of a display calibration device lacking a few bells and whistles, but accurate enough to quickly correct your color woes, look no further than the Datacolor Spyder3 Express. Sure, there are alternatives out there, and some of which work just about as well as this device - however, they will also cost you an arm and a leg.In spite a few random comments floating around on various forums and review sites, the Spyder3 Express works superbly with the glossy MacBook LCD. I have owned and used this product for several months and could not be happier with the results. The real test came when submitting photos to my print company, Mpix.com, and finding the colors to be identical to that of my display. Sometimes I spend as much as 15 hours on a single image, and knowing what I am looking at on screen will match it's print is absolutely invaluable. The calibration process is quick and easy, with step-by-step instructions to guide you along the way. The software can also run in the "background" of your OS, keeping track of the display's calibration status, and reminding you when you need to calibrate again. So, whether you're a professional photographer, graphic artist, or just someone who wants to be certain their beautiful photos look that way to everyone else, this is one item you cannot afford to pass up.

After installing the software, you plug in the device and after the USB drivers initialize you proceed to run the Spyder 3 Express software. Well, the drivers would not initialize properly in my Windows XP SP3 system with all the latest patches.I uninstalled the drivers and re-plugged the device with the same result. The system reports a problem, says it can't initialize the drivers and gives an error number of 37, a standard Windows message.Completely uninstalling with deep removal software and re-installation yielded the same results.I even downloaded the latest software/drivers from Datacolor and re-installed after a complete uninstallation -- still not working.I've been in the computer industry for 35 years as a software engineer, systems analyst, MSFT beta tester, design engineer and computer scientist. I only spent 2-3 hours fiddling with this package but I don't think it deserves more effort. It's a poor design. Rather than generate a standard color configuration file readable by other software, it generates it's own file, and requires that you run a program in the background all the time. It leaves yet another icon in your systray, and if you stop the background program, your calibration isn't honored and the correction disappears.Even though the background program is small and does't use many CPU cycles, it's another layer of complication added to your computer, which may already have more than enough complications.I didn't test this but the program requires strict registration using a product key, so there may be no way you can use it to correct all your computers by moving the device from one to another. You might need to buy a Spyder for each of your computers. I never got far enough to register my copy via the Internet and so didn't attempt to try it on another computer. Not using standard color configuration files and requiring a constant background utility is show-stopping enough for me. Add to that the fragility of the software with its inability to initialize on a standard XP SP3 computer and you get a package better left to die.Fortunately, I bought this through Amazon and they stand behind their products so returning the item was far simpler than using it. One star for Spyder3Express, but five stars for Amazon.

Updated to Spyder3 from Spyder2 which I had used for several years. The Spyder3 was fairly easy to install. However, there were no 1. 2. 3. type instructions with the product in the box. Going online upon following the instructions, the unit did about 7/8 of its calibration and quit. These happened both times when I tried to calibrate. Finally found "take a ticket" button for support and sent it in. They answered within 24 hours that they tried to answer quickly and would try to get to it as soon as possible. That was a week ago and I have not heard from them. I resent the ticket two days later, couldn't access their time/reply link and finally yesterday tried to use Spyder3 again when it worked. I still have not heard from support and do not know if they looked into it or not.

The Spyder 3 Express comes in a reuseable package that I didn't have to cut up to get at. Installation was fairly easy and straightforward. You need to enter a code that comes with the unit and via internet get a installation number. You will need this installation number for installing into multiple computers. The software works well with XP (32), Vista (32) and Windows 7 (64). The software calibrates the screen after a series of reading from the hardware and provides the computer with a file to adjust the monitor colors. This seems to work independent of whether somebody messing with your monitor settings or not - the colors go back to the Spyder settings always. The brightness and contrast do not though.Pros:Cheap, Easy installation, works well...accurate color adjustment.Cons:It does not adjust brightness and contrast. You need to do it on your own.It doesn't know anything about dual monitors - gets very confused if you have two monitors.the hardware hangs on the monitor loosely. I had to help by putting a finger on it. It got tiresome.
