I am not a cajon player, but my friend who plays percussion doesn't have an Amazon account, so I bought it for him. Now with "social distancing" we have to wait until we play together! So I am going to write the review from my point of view.My Donner cajon is the full size one, measuring 12 x 12 x 18 height counting the rubber feet. When it is not being used, it can become a side “table” to place a recorder or other electronic equipment. The hole allows you to place some things like papers, etc inside the unit for transport. I would be careful not to put something hard so the snares (see below) get damaged. The cajon comes with a nice black carrying backpack, with good all side protection and bottom reinforcement pads, solid backpack straps, a top handle and a zippered pocket 12 x 10 x 1.5 in. to carry accessories, papers etc. The cajon itself is light (9 pounds), with solid supporting sides and well made, with an attractive finish (clear in my case). It is well put together, with nice rounding edges and tight joints. Four solid rubber feet isolate the cajon to improve the sound. The front sounding board or "tapa" (tah pah) seems to be birch, and it is well secured to the supporting walls by 16 removable screws. After watching a couple of videos, I could get different sounds out of the cajon. The volume is more than adequate to accompany acoustic guitars, etc. This being the larger size cajon, the bass depth is pretty good. The cajon has 2 internal snares (similar to guitar strings) placed close to the internal side of the tapa, each snare shaped like an "A" shape. The top the “A” for each snare is fixed somewhat to the top of the inside of the tapa and the A legs for both snares go to a wood piece that can be adjusted - via 2 hex screws in the bottom of the cajon - to "tune" the snares. Inside, there is a holder for the hex wrench which comes included with the cajon.Additionally, on the inside of the tapa, there are two velcro strips that can be positioned to adjust the "muting" of the snares, letting you go from a drier sound similar to a conga drum to one more similar to a snare drum.Comparing prices, I only saw one unit with a lower price, from a brand not known for its quality. The higher prices could be up to two and half times more than this unit. All in all, the Donner cajon is a well made unit, with a very good sound, accessories and a very reasonable price.

Really good for getting the job done, plays like any other cajon so it is relatively easy to play. I can definitely say you get what you pay for and I intend on getting another one (mine was lost in a fire). Also it coming with a case does knock it up a notch compared to other cajons, it makes it much easier to move.

This is my first cajon and I've only owned it for 5 days. A friend asked that I accompany him with bass and percussion for his live gigs. I watched a bunch of YouTube videos and decided on this Donner cajon. I was pleased that actual sound is exactly like what I heard on YouTube reviews. It uses strings for snare sound and does a fairly good job at it. I also like the size because I can comfortably sit on it without hunching over. Price was another factor because honestly I didn't know if I would even like playing a cajon. We just had our first practice and it was a success. I now have another instrument to add to my repertoire :) Guitar, bass, and now a cajon!

My son played this drum at a friend’s house and fell in love with it. So we had to get one of our own.

My boyfriend is an avid music lover and has been wanting one for some time. Couldn't pass up on the price and it was 100% worth it. Great for beginners and those with previous drumming experience.

The sound quality even after adjusting the strings several times is like banging on a hollow table top. But, the price is good to start on this

Bless her, she got engaged and sold her drum kit to get a deposit on their appartment.I know she loves these box drums, I remember mildly a very drunken night where she managed to get a band to let her use theirs.Although theirs was full size and probably better quality, I'll never forget how excited she was.I got the compact one, because the flat is small, it comes with a rucksack which she absolutely loves because it means she can take it with her when she goes to festivals and house parties (normality permitting)She's absolutely over the moon, she said it needs tuning, but you can see she was excited to get straight on it and give it a whirl.

This portable cajon is everything I wished a full size cajon was. I was sure it would sound way quieter than a full size cajon, but was really surprised by it. Sure, it's not full size, but we were able to get a really rich range of sounds out of it. Unexpectedly, the bass is not quieter than on a full size cajon. We did not have to adapt our playing a lot, going from a full size cajon to this one, something we had to do with other, smaller portable cajons. The tapa is good and great looking birch. It sounds good and solid either slapping, touching or drumming, but you'll have to adjust a little bit if you're used to a full size cajon : not a lot, but you'll be out of your comfort zone for a day or two. I tought it would be too small for sitting on it, but instead I realised it's perfect either for sitting or holding it with your knees. My 5 years old has no problem sitting on it and playing it which is a big plus since he can't do that on our full sized one. I'm honestly surprised they could build a cajon of this quality and sell it at this price : the birch they used is really great.I was wary about the sound on this cajon, but with minimum setup (like a minute or less) I was getting the same song on it that I have on my full size cajon. When I played it out of the box, I had a lot of rattle, but I guess it was shipped with the strings at the lowest setting. A 16th of a turn got these strings perfect to play without a hint of rattle. Same thing for the screws around the box : I got a great clicky attack with a minimum of setup in seconds. We've played around a bit with it in the studio with friends and we've even got a great punk sound out of it. It has less consisten tone than an electronic beat box, but a better sound. The sound is not high pitched or quiet. Nobody who tried it thought that the snare or bass was louder than the other : even if it's portable, it's pretty nicely balanced. Even with our bass at full power, we did not get interference in the cajon which was a great surprise since even with a rubber rug, we do get soem normally. As a bonus, you get a gig bag and I have to say it's surprisingly sturdy and well padded. It's a great bonus and we appreciated it a lot going to and fro the studio trying the cajon with friends. I would not throw the instrument down the stairs with the gig bag, but it managed to prevent quite some scratches and bumps in a few days. Since we're thinking of bringing this cajon camping, the fact that it's smaller, packs quite a punch volume wise and has a great protecting gig bag will just be super practical. These free gig bags are normally just some thin nylon, but this one's sturdy and thick. Great bonus!Pros :- Looks good- Sounds good- Stable- Easy setup- Easy to transport- Not too big for a 40 lbs kid- Not too small for a 6'1'' 200 lbs guy- Sound is studio friendly- Great gig bag- Great range- Price is spot onCons :- Looks drab if you dont like birch- No option to disengage the wires if you're into that- You wont get a great range of sounds from the sides- On some notes, the sweet spot is smaller (but remember, it's a portable cajon)Pictures :- you get what you're looking at on the amazon picture, except for the gig bag which looks great and professional. The cajon was tested in a studio and a home environment, by a dozen persons (including a professionnal musician and a professionnal percussionist) with variety of mics and accompanying various instruments.
