It’s not easy to install on an F250 1996. Not the parts fault, the part is great. But seriously though, not fun.

My 1999 F250 Super Duty pickup would not restart after stopping at a gas station. After researching possible causes, I ordered this ignition switch actuator rod. The actuating rod links the key cylinder to the ignition switch located under the dash on the steering column. In this case, the small steel pin at the end of the rod that fits into the ignition switch had fallen out and was not moving the switch. Its interesting how a twenty dollar part can shut down a vehicle and cause a hefty towing bill. The part itself arrived quickly and quality is equal to or better than Ford OEM. Replacing it yourself is not recommended if you do not have basic mechanical skills, but if you search Youtube there are several good videos available to give you the confidence you need to figure it out. I am a visual learner and find that the videos are a big help in deciding whether my skills are adaptable to a given repair project. As Mr. Eastwood says, "A man's got to know his limitations." Or you can fork over $1200.00 bucks to a mechanic. The steering column is a two piece arrangement and the replacement of the actuator can be done by taking off the top flange and leaving the bottom piece installed under the dash. ( See videos.) The one thing I learned on my project that would have made things easier, especially if you are doing it solo is this: Clamp some vise grips on the steering shaft under the hood near the firewall so that the shaft cannot move. It makes a HUGE difference when you are reinstalling the top flange. Trust me, it will save you much time and curse words.Hope this helps someone.

Difficult install and videos are hard to find but find one you must. The older model videos are more prevalent and it will get you most of the way there. $700 repair at the shop done for less than $20 and about 4 hours of labor. If your key is turning and nothing is happening this is the answer. A little filing of the plastic is required once you have the steering column off to get this to slide in.

Worked great for me, the teeth were shredded on mine, if you grind the top/bottom of the part that has the metal anchor stick, you can fit it into the slot by putting it in sideways and then lifting it up so it stays in the slot, it wont fall out and you will not have to take the entire column apart.
