I bought this for a 2002 Chevy Suburban. We had to replace various electrical items on this vehicle when we bought it because it was sitting outside in the Pacific NW with a leaky sunroof. We bought the Suburban from a broker and on the way home it got stuck in 4 wheel drive. We later discovered the vehicle's history and realized it needed a lot of work before we could drive it. The switch was our first fix and it installed easy enough and perfectly replaced the OEM part. As it turned out we also had to replace the Transfer Case Module in order for the 4-wheel drive to work. We bought a Dorman for that part too. The 4-wheel drive is working reliably for almost a year now. I'm happy I was I able to find this item for such a great price. The dealer quoted us $800 for just the switch repair and $75 to diagnose. With this part, and a youtube video[...] it took my husband about half an hour to do the repair. The worst part is taking off the dash panel, with is a little cumbersome and awkward. After researching Dorman, we felt confident trying their parts and have used 4 of different Dorman parts getting this Suburban on the road. We saved a lot of time and money with each part we used. The dash looks just as it did coming out of the factory.

It was an exact replacement for the part I needed and worked perfectly. Unfortunately, it did not fix the problem, so will have to do some more troubleshooting.

Was able to install this on my lunch hour and had time to eat, make a batch of cookie dough for my wife and make an important phone call. Eliminates the 4 wheel drive service light and difficulty selecting 4WD or going back to 2WDAs others have said only issue is the light coming out the side but to have a working selector switch for a great price it is more than worth a very minor inconvenience.

I had to replace this switch 4 times. I figured there had to be something else going on. I researched this problem and found an old article online that talked about a Chevy assembly defect that must be corrected or this switch will keep blowing out. Here it is:"I have found out that usually the two ground wires that are attached to the frame right under the front of the driver’s door is the culprit that causes the 4wd selector switch in the dash to go bad. Chevy had the bright idea of applying the undercoating and/or not cleaning the point of contact of the ground wires before they bolted them to the frame therefore overtime moisture, dirt and corrosion affects the contacts of the threads of the bolts which are the only source of ground the two sets of wires have. There are 2 things you will need to do. First you will need to take the bolts out and use a wire brush to clean down to the metal of the frame as well as the bold threads and ends of the wire attachments and then reattach the ground wires to the frame (time to complete – less than 5 minutes). Second you will need to replace the 4wd selector switch in the dash." Mike Gilbert, St. Joseph, MOThe wires were easy to locate, right where the article said they were. I did what the article said and, so far, no more blowing of switches.UPDATE 12/23/16 - COULD BE A SOFTWARE ISSUEI found this post in a forum:"Went to Millington Chev. today and had them look at my service 4WD issue.Turns out it was a software issue. The total cost- $88.94 ($74 labor + $7.40 environmental fee+ 7.54 tax).Ticket reads " Customer states service 4WD warning lamp (DIC) is on and unable to select into various settings. Checked and found no DTC's .Found TSB #1481410. Reprogrammed TCCM. Checked 4WD status. All functioning properly."The service tech gave me a printout of the TSB.It is Document ID # 1054312Customer ConcernSome customers may comment that the service 4WD indicator is on, or the 4WD system is inoperative.CauseThe Transfer Case Control Module (TCCM) has not received the wake-up call during key-up and has remained in "sleep mode," it will not communicate with the class II bus or the Tech 2.CorrectionRemove the underhood TCCM fuse (labeled ATCM or TREC). Wait 30 seconds and then reinstall the fuse. This should "wake up" and communicate with Tech 2. Reprogram the TCCM using normal SPS procedures, using operating system calibration number 12580062 (or the most current calibration)."Be willing to push the software issue with your dealer before changing out parts.

Short of replacing a fuse, this is the cheapest and easiest fix for a 4x4 problem. Remove bezel (just pull at the corner) and pop the switch in and out. Then, pop the bezel back on. The whole process took about 10 minutes. There were cheaper choices, but there were others that were waaay more. Dorman is a name I recognize. And, as usual, Amazon got it to me quick.

PRODUCT ARRIVED QUICKLY AND AS ADVERTISED. EASILY INSTALLED AND FUNCTIONED WITHOUT ISSUES. TIME WILL TELL IF PRODUCT LIVES UP TO FACTORY ORIGINAL.IF YOU OWN A 4WD GM/CHEVY PICKUP WITH THIS MODEL OF 4WD SWITCH AND HAVE BEEN HAVING ISSUES WITH INTERMITTEN ISSUES OF SHIFTING IN AND OUT OF 2WD TO 4WD, ETC. MOST LIKELY THIS SELECETOR SWITCH HAS GONE BAD (HISTORY STATES SOLDER JOINTS CRACK OVER TIME. I HAVE A 2000 SILVERADO 1500. IN SHORT, TO INSTALL JUST PLACE THE GEAR INTO FIRST GEAR ON THE STEERING COLUMN.... DROP YOUR STEERING WHEEL TILT TO THE (ALL THE WAY) DOWN POSITION.... PULL DASH OFF BY PLACING YOUR FINGERS ON THE TOP OF DASH AND PULLING TOWARDS YOU (RELEASING METAL FASTENTERS)....PULL SWITCH STRAIGHT OUT (PLASTIC NOTCHES HOLD IT IN PLACE VIA NOTCHES - AND YOU MAY HAVE TO LIFT UP ON THE HOUSING THAT HOLDS THE SWITCH)....PULL ELECTICAL PLUG CONNECTORS OUT - TWO PLUG CONNECTIONS THAT SNAP IN AND OUT....THEN SNAP DORMAN DRIVE SWITCH INTO PLACE AND THEN PUSH/SNAP DASHBOAD BACK INTO PLACE. PRESTO! YOU SAVE YOURSELF A HEFTY MECHANICS BILL AND ABOUT HALF PRICE OF WHAT AN ORIGINAL/OEM WOULD COST. THIS SELECTOR SWITCH BY DORMAN IS MADE IN CHINA, BUT I WOULDN'T BE SURPRISED IF THE ORIGINAL IS MADE THERE NOW AS WELL. RESEARCH STATES DORMAN APPEARS TO BE REPUTABLE AND HAS BEEN MAKING AFTER MARKET ITEMS FOR SOME TIME. GOOD LUCK.
