This vacuum works great when paired with a cyclone separator. I use a cyclone separator to remove large particles and this extends the life of the filter inside the collector. I cant imagine using a standard shopvac that is so loud that you can't even hear yourself think. This unit still makes a vacuum noise, but not nearly as loud as my shopvac. The unit has a "knocker" on it so you can knock the debris off of the filter without having to open up the bottom dump cap even though I haven't needed to use it yet due to the cyclone separator. I totally recommend this Dust Collector.
