As a musician, I often need to play recorded material into the mix. The easiest way to do that is by plugging the phone into one of the stereo channels on my mixer. Sadly, phones don't have 3.5mm audio jacks anymore, so like most people, I was using a cheap USB dongle. It worked. More, I cannot say.I finally got sick of the crappy sound and decided to find something that would be better. In the world of the audiofile, spending hundreds or even thousands of dollars is typical for a good audio interface. I wasn't prepared to do that for this application.Enter Fiio. I have used Fiio products in the past and they've always delivered great bang for the buck. The KA1 is no exception! The high end is far more distinct than the cheap dongles, and the sound stage is noticeably larger. Finally, the bass is very natural and well-defined without being boomy. The build quality seems very good. The cable looks to use good materials and the casing on the body is aluminum, not cheap plastic. While this device basically sits on my desk, it is very small and portable if you have a pair of wired headphones you want to use on the go. This will sound much better than what's built into your phone.

Use this with my Audio Technica ATH-M50x and my Sennheiser 560s. Listening on Spotify at full quality. The dongle really helped power both pairs of headphones. With the Sennheiser open back cans the sound stage really seems to open up pretty noticeably. The Audio Technica cans have more pronounced highs and mids to go along with the already pronounced lows. For $50 I'm super pleased. I no longer have to max out the volume to get good sound. The dangling cable on this unit seems less than durable but only time will tell. IMHO this is definitely worth a try at such an affordable price. Great addition to my setup, especially for use out in the everyday world.

ok as so with any DAC - it is always #1. subjective to ones own hearing and #2. dependent on your quality of headphones. first of all - can you really tell loss vs lossless - tough to say for anyone person....will it improve basic / cheepy wired earphones - sure - but to get the full value you are going to need IEMS -rai - bose - campfire - again as tech stands now - there are now wireless / bluetooth lossless headphones -indeed there is great convenience - but no lossless - let alone hi-res - MQA etc...for my part - the small size and NO NEED for a lighting dongle is a plus - along with the $50.00 price point.all DAC has ESS chipset and lately there have been quite a few chinese DACs come to market (mostly usb-c) but this has a iphone lightning plug - most audiophiles would recommend the THX or Dragonfly DAC - both though are 3-5x the cost (albeit made USA) - but they too require dongles to use on your iphone.there too is the Helm bolt - but such is also 2x cost and USB-Cunder blind testing - i dont know i can hear the diff vs. my dragonfly cobalt - have tried over and over with my fav songs sampled at 96khz - listeing for every bit of nuance i can and again i dont know i can hear an diff in sound.in the end for $50.00 - with no need for a dongle (again albeit chinese made) it appears to be well worth it and of good quality - again though - if you are going down the audiophile rabbit hole - a dac is only part of the chain - for a true full experieince - you too need to invest in IEMs -otherwise - forget everything and stick with you bluetooth air pods - who knows in the coming years -lossless might be availiable and with apple's spatial and dolby masters - things might suffice for you....

It’s well-built and opens up the sound stage really nicely. The only drawback is it takes my battery life of my phone pretty quickly when streaming. But for ~$50, it’s definitely worth the buy.

The sound quality is great, but the fade in before you hear anything is annoying and I returned it for that reason. You don't hear the first couple seconds of anything as the sound fades in.

January 2025 Update: It no longer works. This product has too many connectivity issues with my iPhone. It frequently requires me to unplug the device and try again. When it works the audio quality sounds fine, although I have nothing else to compare it to. I do appreciate the thick braiding of the cable because it feels more robust than what I see from other brands. This ensures that it can take some mild abuse if it gets yanked a bit. Perhaps my device alone has issues but for the $50 I paid I would expect not having to wonder if it’s going to work today.

This works great with my iPhone and does a solid job as a DAC. It does as good of a job as others that cost a lot more and require an adaptor that drives the cost even higher.

i was looking for a nice portable DAC but settled on this inexpensive one. I have the Android USBc version. It came with a mostly chinese manual. No installation necessary. Just plugged it into my google pixel and plugged my cans in. Way better sound than the cheap headphone USB-c dongles I've been using. Another upside is the fact that there is way more volume now. I used to listen to the loud stuff maxed out and with ear fatigue wished I had a little bit more. I now put the volume well below max with this dongle. I mean, for 50 bucks it did what I wanted.I can't speak for the long term reliability of this yet. I see some reviews where the connection isn't solid. I will modify my review if this thing breaks down earlier than I think it should.

The description says "3.5mm single-ended and a 4.4mm balanced, 2 headphone outputs", which isn't true. It's a single 3.5mm output only, which is exactly what I wanted in my case. This means the unit is small - tiny, in fact. The materials feel nice in the hand - no plasticy garbage here - and the boost in volume is impressive. Sounds quality is much improved, with more detail at much lower volume settingsWorth the money (and more)
