I got this set for the Stainless Steel scoop and the magnetic holder. It's nice that it came with some descaling cleaner and a scale preventing filter as well. This is an official General Electric product made for their Opal Ice machines, everything came in a GE box, with smaller boxes with each component inside the larger box. The replacement scoop is a quite a bit larger than the original plastic scoop, which I am happy about, because I like a LOT of ice, but you could put the plastic scoop in the holder too if you want... so if you want to run the stainless scoop through the dishwasher once in a while you can use the plastic one until it's done. The magnetic holder stays where you put it and doesn't move on its own during use and it holds either scoop perfectly.This set comes with a scale preventing filter which is also supposed to remove any chlorine and also prevent scale buildup by trapping minerals inside it, and Descaling powder to remove previous buildup. I really can't speak about how effective these may be because my Opal 2 is new still, and hasn't had time to build up any scale, so I have nothing to compare it to, but also, I am using Reverse Osmosis water in it, so there are no minerals in the water to build up any scale. But I'm glad I have the scale preventing filter and I figured it wouldn't hurt to install it.This is a nice upgrade kit for my Opal ice machine, and I'm really happy with the magnetic scoop holder and stainless steel scoop, those alone are worth it to me, as they match the machine and function really well.

This is a an interesting set of accessories for the Opal ice maker.I have one and love it, so the idea of doing more to keep it clean and my ice pure was appealing.What I fell in love with, however, is the ice scoop.I have been keeping a little plastic scoop in a cup on top of my ice maker, which is not idealNow, however, I have a sturdy metal scoop, that sits perfectly in a holder, which attaches via a magnet to the side of the ice maker.That fact that the attachment is metal makes everything better because you can move the holder around until you find where you like to hang it best.I will also add, the quality of the scoop and holder is high; both feel very heavy.In addition to the scoop, you also get a filter, so that whatever water you add will undergo a cleaning process before it become ice.The recommendation is that you replace it approximately every 3 months; finding replacement filters on Amazon is very easy.Lastly, you also get packets of pre-measured citric acid, which acts as a descaler.If you have a side tank, just keep in mind the descaler is only for the primary reservoir.They specifically warn you against putting it in the extra tank.When you run it through the main tank, you dislodge of a lot of the white mineral build up that can clog your machine or break off and get stuck in your ice.In the end, I would get this for the scoop, but do appreciate the descaler and filter as a nice way to kick of your cleaning regimen.Based on my experience, I would therefore recommend this kit to owners of the Opal Icemaker.

GE Profile Opal Upgrade Kit is a collection of accessories for the Opal Ice Maker. It includes a stainless steel scoop, magnetic holder, a scale inhibiting filter, and a 6 pack of descaling powder. The scoop is solid and heavy and fits perfectly in the holder, which itself will magnetically cling to the side of the ice maker. The scale inhibiting filter cleans and filters the water from both the primary water tank and also the side auxiliary tank (if installed). The Opal itself will alert you that it needs descaled after 100 hours of ice making, and the descaling powder (citric acid) is perfect for the job. Mix it according to the instructions and let it sit in the unit for 18 hours (primary reservoir only). It will keep your ice maker free of mineral build up. Highly recommended.

There is nothing like the convenience of having nugget ice in the comfort of your own home. But, to keep it running worry free requires some effort to keep it clean and healthy. This upgrade kit is what you need to prevent scale and algae or mildew from forming. The filter is good for three months and can be purchased separately. I use one packet to making clean solution every 3 or for weeks, so in about 5 months I will order more, also sold separately. Other reviewers like the metal scoop and holder and I agree that is is much better that the plastic one that came with the Opal originally. But once you have it, you don't need to buy this kit again. Just buy the filters and descaling powder packs separately and save $15.
