I had been searching for a direct replacement string retainer for my Sadowsky Metro Express 5 String JJ after switching the hardware from chrome to black. After trying several brands, none of which worked, I found this one. It fits perfectly, no extra work at all.

I mixed black and gold hardware together on a recent 5-string bass build. This 4 string hold-down fit beautifully and works like a charm.

a) NOTE I ORDERED BOTH OF THESE INDIVIDUALLY. They do not come as a set, but are the same MFG and equal quality ( one is a 3 string version, the other is a 4 string) b) Arrive well packaged and undamaged. c) These look and feel like gold plated solid brass, even though they are not. d) The 3 string retainer is for 4 string basses and the 4 string retainer is for 5 string basses ( you usually don't retain the low E string). D) Before you make screw marks, loosen up your strings and place these where the strings are least stressed at the top and bottom of the retainers, then mark the holes and remove retainer before drilling pilot holes. These are solid and anchor the strings well. e) The only potential issue I can see is the edges are somewhat sharp and potential might cut into the string, but I doubt that will be an issue. You won't be able to file them down without removing the finish so I don't recommend that. If your hardware is gold colored, I recommend these!

Excellent string tree for bass guitar that can hold down four strings so that tuning is retained. It appears to work well but you really need to position it properly to reap the full benefits. It looks good but functionality was the main reason behind my getting this. Price and quality is very good.

I got this 4- string gold colored retainer for my 5-string Carvin. The gold color matched the other hardware on the guitar and I only need the retainer for 4 of the strings since the B-string is very close to the nut. The retainer installed easily and looks real good.

I used this to upgrade the string retainers on my 6 J style bass. The ones that came with my bass were staggered but there wasn't that much of a noticeable difference between that configuration and using this straight retainer. Still sounds great, no string buzz, and looks better doing it.
