For content and tips, simply refer to the previous review by George N. Lawrence. Everything you want to know is there. The aim of this review is simply to add my voice to those already saying that this investment is worth its weight in chains(although it doesn't weigh that much). It looks overly complicated, but it's really not. Setting up for the first use took me roughly 10 minutes as I figured out what went where, and what did what. The next setup took about 2 minutes(for a different chain). Sharpening my first chain took me about 45 minutes(on a very worn chain previously butchered by yours truly), again as I learned how the gadget likes to be handled(plus the time it took to find the short tooth and setup the stop accordingly). Sharpening the next(touchup of a newer chain) took roughly 20 minutes. One minor-ly odd note(RESOLVED, see UPDATE below)...perhaps it's just my technique, but the tooth length stop does not, in practice, appear to be %100 symmetrical. By that I mean that once it's set to cut a particular length of tooth, when reversing the direction to cut the teeth on the opposite side, I find I need to adjust the stop once again to achieve the same length of tooth on the second side. It's very easy to reset(takes a minute or two to dial it back in), but it is an opportunity for error that could result in the opposing sides to have teeth of different length and a curved cut if you're not careful when switching sides. I would deduct a star for this if I hadn't achieved amazing results on my first attempt at sharpening with this device(after years of disappointing results freehand).I was tempted to replace the wingnuts with the knurled knobs that Mr. Lawrence suggested, but honestly the wingnuts are not as annoying as I expected so I doubt I will bother.I haven't yet tried this in the field, but I'm not sure that's really what it's for. I now own 2 chains that can get me through a day's session, after which I can touch up both at the workbench using this sharpener and my vice.Great results and seems to be built well enough to last a good while(no plastic).UPDATE: well, I re-read George N. Lawrence's review now that I've had this thing through its paces(why didn't I do that FIRST? :)) and, of course, he covers the issue I mentioned above. It appears that taking the time to center the chain in the jig will ensure symmetry when changing sides. I will be trying this on my next usage. Thanks again George!

I did my homework on using the Grandberg G106B chain saw chain sharpening jig by watching YouTube videos. When it arrived, I put it right to work. It met and exceeded my expectations. I would consider it the "Cadillac" of the chain saw chain sharpeners. It has so many adjustments to accurately sharpen the chain to factory specifications. Once I figured out how the settings we're to be set, it took me about 15 minutes to sharpen my chain. Even though it is a little pricey the quality is there. I can highly recommend it. Plus it's made in America.

I used this product exclusively to sharpen a ripping chain. My hands are accustomed to the angle of normal crosscut chain and I was having a difficult time sharpening my ripping chain effectively by hand. This product easily accommodates that angle, or any other. It is simple and clever. Once you get a feel for it, you can really move right along. It bevels both directions, meaning you can do both left and right teeth without taking it off the bar. In use, it does a nice job, holding the file at a very consistent angle and allowing great fine adjustment. The file loosens in the thumbscrews constantly, I found myself readjusting that like every 20th stroke, which was annoying, but otherwise I found it easy to use. I was very pleased with how it sharpened the chain. So far so good. But on probably about the 15th time I used it, it failed. The tool is constructed out of die-cast aluminum, with tiny little cast ears where the top section mates to the hinge pins that allow depth adjustment. When you are filing, you put a lot of side-loaded pressure on this hinge, and this is where mine failed. This is definitely a design flaw. If you look through these reviews, this is a common point of failure.I contacted Granberg support seeking warranty info and replacement parts availability, and they replied promptly and are sending me replacement parts. So while I remain disappointed by this design/construction issue, the support is extremely impressive.Overall, this is a clever idea, albeit to fulfill a niche need. For crosscut chain angles, the Stihl product works much better for me, takes up a fraction of the space, and has proven indestructible. But for odd angles and/or high-precision needs, this is hard to beat, at the cost of being a rather delicate tool. Maybe mine failing was a fluke– I'll find out, as Granberg stands behind their product. I will update this review if I manage to break it again.

Accept that there is a bit of a learning curve. Invest some time to watch a few videos (many will have bad technique but each offers new information), and then do some trial and error. Take your time - the results will be worth it.I have hand-sharpened my saws for 20 years and gotten pretty good at it, but this does a better job. If you are in a hurry, do not use it - a quick hand filing will have to do. But, if you take the time to sit and focus on precision, it will deliver 'as new' results. I was able to get all the teeth within a range of 5/1000ths of an inch in length, with correct depth and curve profiles. Having electronic callipers is key to finding which tooth to start on, and then to sample teeth as you move along.Sharpening is a little like tuning an instrument - a little art and a little science. It does not take long to get a feel for this tool and your results will improve with practice.Let the file do the cutting, and only file in one direction. Slow is smooth and smooth is fast.

Good but needs a manual. Also does not accommodate different bar thicknesses. I will have to drill and add three extra screws opposite the main mounting screw to be able to center the jig on my bar. Until then I must set the amount of cut and depth of gullet on each side independently from each other from scratch and also measure to choose two starting cutters of equal length because the pivot point and round black file-stop screw are not centered for my particular bar thickness (Stihl bar for 0.325 chain). I can't just flip the jig around to do the second side on the settings for the first side. That said, the jig does a fantastic sharpening job on each side. My chains are so sharp they do not need sharpening again for at least two tankfuls of gas (cutting softwood) and although the cutters on opposite sides of the chain are sharpened independently from differently measured starting settings, the chains seem to be cutting straight.

This thing is great to use once you figure out the measurements. The degree indicators are a little hard to read. but once set up, this thing is amazing. A little time consuming for a 50yr old newb, but I'm no longer destroying chains. once the depth is set, you'll file all teeth to the same length. So the saw cuts straight. If not, you need a new bar. Or square the bar you're using. I did some research before I bought the Granberg. Although I have no experience with other tools like this I based my purchase on customer reviews. I'm glad I did. I'm super happy with this purchase and the results I've seen so far. I've sharpened 2 chains, and other than me being a slow learner, this item works great. I've got more time than money, so this is a great purchase for me. I have the time to sit and sharpen a chain. About 30 mins for me.

Great product, very well built, do not get cheap brands made by other companies as they warp, wreck your chain, and jam up. This product works like it should and makes chain sharpening a breeze

I wrote a review, but they didn’t like what I wrote so I have to write another one. It’s way overpriced on Amazon..
