Superbly well built tool....so much so that I ordered 2 other sizes. The 16" size will do a 40 inch circle. Comes with oily rust preventative on it so you will have to clean it before use. Also the point needs a little filing to make it a needle point.

I am being facetious in describing as a sword. But, this is a heavy duty compass to draw large circles, perfect for making mathematical models or home projects. You can attach a regular pencil or pen, rather than using drafting lead. I use a #3 pencil for construction of math models. I remarked in the title that it is a sword because I am thinking of the lack of discipline in public schools. If a student had this in their hands, they might become bored with the lack of instruction, and use it for sword fights. I recommend to parents: Keep your kids at home and teach them yourself. You can do much better!

This is a very large, sturdy, metal compass. I am using it to draw circles on fabric for sewing projects. As a very large traditional style compass, this is very functional. There is zero flimsiness. All adjustment points are functional with generally smooth motion, or firm hold where needed. If you are using this on wood or other solid, not flexible surfaces, you should have no issue using this compass. The problem I am having is due to the top of the compass being extremely sharp on the two outer edges of the moving arm. The pointed ends are the area of expected "hazard," but that is not the issue with this - thought it is as expected. Once the compass is expanded, the outer edges at the top of the compass are exposed, and if you hold the compass from the top, where the joint is located, you can and most likely will cut your hand/thumb in slices or punctures. It's extremely painful. This is particularly hazardous if you are having to use your spare hand for holding down a flexible or flimsy item, such as thin paper or fabric, leaving you with only one hand at the top of the compass with which you rotate. This hazard is why I rated this with three stars. I am planning to file down the problematic edges hoping this will resolve the issue and not cause any functionality issues.Despite these troubles, the compass works very well and I'm glad I purchased it, as I needed a very large compass with a pointed end (instead of the suction cup styles many others have).I paid ~$27 with free shipping. Until I file down the edges and determine it's still fully functional, I don't want to recommend as it's rather dangerous as is.

This is a best buy for anyone that needs a large compass. Very good quality, all metal. Each arm is 16" long allowing making it possible to layout a huge circle. I'm sure there a lots of applications for this tool. I use it to draw circles when wood turning bowls, plates and platters.

This is the kind of tool one might have encountered in a 10th grade plane geometry class, or at least something like it, where the object was to draw a large circle on the board to demonstrate something to a class, except that the ones I remember were made of wood and could hold chalk. This one could not hold chalk, but it could hold a marker with color ink for drawing on a white board. But that is not why I bought this. I got it for a prop in a Nativity play, where the Three Wise Men from the East are made out to be astrologers, Each one carries a prop that an astrologer / astronomer would use, such as this compass, a protractor, and a telescope. But as I look at it, I can imagine a few applications where I can use it in the kitchen, such as marking off a circle of pastry dough which is less than the usual 9 or 10 inches.

Fantastic! I had to cut a 16" radius for shelving. This did the trick. It was a little oily from cutting fluid. I had to rub that off (or risk ruining my clothes) but it was precise and did the job.Why 4-star? Because 5-Star would have given my a scale on the slide to know I had a 16" radius instead of having to physically measure it with a tape measure. It would also not have been soaked in cutting fluid or other oil. Does make me wonder if it's cheap metal, highly susceptible to rust. Still I have no plans to use it in the weather.

It will get the job done I guess. Looks like it was made with stone tools over a dirt floor. I get that tools might ship with a protective oil film but perhaps not used motor oil! I don't recommend this product.

As I don't use a large compass all that often, iI figured this would be "good enough"... Boy, was I surprised! I have a French made version of the 12" version of this. With a spritz of degreaser, then a spritz of Top Cote, this is an excellent tool. So glad I didn't spend more!
