PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
A great little tool for filing and cutting top nuts so that your strings sit perfectly with the action as low as you wish and a price that is so cheap every guitarist can afford to buy one now. Please note this is an upgraded version of the original file where the wire files are now 100mm long with heavier 30mm long cutting file "teeth"
If you look at the close up photo of the largest and smallest files you will see that the cutting surface is a series of concentric "grooves" around the file that provide the cut.
The circular files fold out from the aluminium casing and include all the following sizes so even if you have a guitar with hefty strings tuned down to Low C this file will cut the string groove for it. 12 round files in the set in the following approximate sizes.
0.4mm, 0.5mm, 0.6mm, 0.7mm, 0.8mm, 0.8mm, 0.9mm, 1.0mm, 1.1mm, 1.2mm, 1.3mm, 1.4mm, 1.6mm
Please note this is NOT a professional grade nut file tool that will set you back a lot of money BUT it is perfect for the average guitarist and home builder to successfully file and adjust a few plastic top nuts. Flipping heck its not much more money than the cost of an average top nut itself. File sizes are approximate as measured by me with a digital micrometer.
NOTE - this is only suitable for plastic top nuts. It will not cut bone, metal or Tusq nuts, all you'll do is wear out your elbow trying, it is ONLY suitable for plastic top nuts. And once again, I can't stress enough, this is NOT a professional grade tool, its a cheap and cheerful way to achieve the job
To be totally honest with you it's actually designed for clearing welding nozzles but is perfect for top nuts as well. The file set also includes a flat file, which I presume is of some use to welders, but I can't see any real use for it for guitarists. I only mention it becuase it's there in the set.

This is EXACTLY as the description reads!! Even puts the file sizes in the description. It's actually a welding tip cleaner, but works to slot a nut if you're in a tight spot. It's not going to last a lifetime, I'd expect you're smart enough to know that a tool this inexpensive won't do that. I gave this 5 stars because the description matched the product perfectly and it does exactly what the seller said it would! I'll use it till it wears out and buy another one!

This seemed moreLike a welding torch nozzle cleaner.

I chose this because the price was low and there's a great range of rod sizes, but the skinny rods won't do much filing before they bend. Imagine using a hack saw blade without a handle, just pinching the ends between your finger tips. That's what this is like.

This small assortment of tools will work for smoothing out nut slots. My high E string was making the sitar noise when tuned to pitch. Used one of the smallest gauge tools and carefully sanded the slot, barely taking any material away but enough to make the sitar sound go away. I can't overstate how happy I was that this small inexpensive tool solved such an annoyance. As other reviewers have pointed out, this is not a proper luthier tool. However, it *will work* for minor applications including smoothing out a nut slot for a problem string. As a hobbyist guitar player who has learned a fair bit of set up maintenance I'm not trying to pay the luthier and/or StewMac prices so this particular tool at its price point is a godsend.

Okay so yes, this is basically a flimsy pos as far as luthier tools are concerned. I did read the descriptions on a few different listings but there’s quite a few of these blue faux-nut files so I just got the cheapest one.So sure, in the description of these guitar nut files there are several caveats, such as not actually being files, not designed for the category it’s deliberately listed under, and so on. My favorite is how it won’t work on bone or ivory or TUSQ or anything else guitar nuts are made out of, with the exception of plastic. Of course plastic nuts are really only encountered as stock parts on cheaper guitars. I can’t imagine anyone that’s planning to file their nut going to all that bother on the cheapest nut possible. Maybe the buyer got a ton of these and is trying to offload them? Why not just sell them as nozzle cleaners/actual application they’re designed for then. Capitalism sucks: just because you CAN make money doesn’t mean you should. But profit is the holy be-all end-all so here we are with junk like this. Silly me, I should’ve thought to pore thru the item description just in case it mentions that it specifically won’t work for what it’s being sold as.Anyway, there is some good news. I ran one of these across a TUSQ nut 3-4x and it want left a groove. No, I would never dream of trying to use these on a slab but if the grooves are already there then these could probably help smooth them out. I have straight files that work and just need some rounding so maybe these can fill that very specific niche. I had low expectations for the price but still hilariously disappointing. These little rods are stronger than solder but that’s about it. About on par with wrapping sandpaper around a Q-Tip as far as rigidity. At a quick glance it looks like there’s useful information stamped on the cover. String gauges, I stupidly assumed. Nope. Must have something to do with whatever these are actually for. I’m guessing if sold as nozzle cleaners then probably only get 2 bucks hence this nut file bologna.Anyways yeah these are junk. I’m a skilled engineer, good at improvising and generally quite poor so I’m accustomed to modifying and settling but even so, these are junk. Put the 5 bucks towards nut files that actually have a remote chance of working halfway decent Otherwise you’ll be out the price of these and likely another $15-20 after you’ve gotten frustrated and screwed up the nut too.Someone should be ashamed of themselves. In addition to myself since I really should’ve known better. Luckily these are so obviously bad that once I opened the package I didn't waste any more time on unrealistic expectations. Even an emory board from a makeup kit would be at least comparable if not better. And much cheaper.

Quality product, good value. Excellent for cleaning (when done lightly) nut slots when changing strings too.

Best thing is that this will provide a nice rounded seat for your guitar strings to sit in. Use other files if you’re making a nut, use this to make small corrections or for the final seat.
