After 17 years, the nylon plug in my travel trailer water heater snapped 1/2 way into the threads. Despite hours of carefully "digging out" the remaining piece(s), the aluminum threads of the water heater were pretty boogered-up.A new plug was purchased, but would not thread in cleanly. This tap was the perfect tool to re-thread and re-form the original thread, after which the new plug screwed in perfectly and did not leak.Got me out of a jamb!

I bought this to clean the powder coat out of the threads on a 3/4" impact sprinkler stand, also from Amazon. Works great. Be sure to use cutting oil (or similar lubricant, WD-40 even if that is all you have around), with ANY tap! Don't use them "dry" and you will greatly extend the life. Also back off a quarter of a turn every full turn to break loose the chips. I don't know about how they would do with new thread cutting in blank stock, I didn't try it, but I really wouldn't expect it to last for many of those. If you are cutting new threads rather than cleaning out and re-forming old ones, get the pricier High Speed Steel tap.

Got my tap quickly, but didn't know there's no center divot to use a spring tap guide in a press or lathe to get it started. There's a nub on the square drive end that they didn't finish grinding off. Other than that, sharp tap.

The tap was shipped in a biodegradable padded paper envelope, which I really like to see. Used it to clean up some goobered up threads in an aluminum water pump housing. It worked great. Made in USA.
